Re: Simplex 4903 NAs being replaced at local supermarket.

OMG this is so similar to the situation at school. Some -9846/9105s that got directly replaced by the Siemens speaker/strobes have a visible rectangle on the left side. I believe it’s dust. It sounds like they painted the wall at some point and painted around the device. The rectangle would be the ...

Re: Help With Starting a Career in the Fire Alarm Field

To add onto what Nick said: If you plan on pursuing an electrical/computer engineering degree (computer engineering is not the same as computer science) you HAVE to brush up on your calculus skills. Calculus is an integral part of engineering. If you didn't take AP Calc in high school you should con...

Re: Time is not correct

To change your board time in the UCP, click here. You will have to convert UTC to your time zone in order to get the right time. For those of you who don't know how UTC time works, I've made this table showing how to do it:

Re: What is your favorite soda pool

How 'bout a Fresca? ??? Fresca is a soda. What I wrote is a line from the classic 1980 film Caddyshack. Technically my favorite soda is Polar Orange, however this beverage is sold locally in parts of the northeast and no one else here would be familiar with it, so I just listed Fresca which has a s...

The NAC on the 4001 also is FWR.
To an enthusiast, the difference between filtered and FWR is whether or not mechanical horns sound raspy. How come mechanical horns on a 4001 don't sound raspy? Can a panel output FWR but not to the level where it affects horn operation?

Q: who manufactured simplex's alarm equippment for them until the mid 90's? There are several potential answers to this question. Notification appliances: Benjamin Electric, Federal Signal, Faraday, Atlas (speakers), Gentex (mini-horns) Smoke detectors: possibly Hochiki Intercom: Valcom Maybe Retir...

Re: Disturbing new detail about my school

The device probably broke since the last notification appliance inspection. Contact the maintenance department and they'll hopefully call someone in to replace it. If the school knows that alarm functionality is impaired in a certain area and has ignored it, that's a different story. I'm not a techn...

Re: What are some things that the General Public misconceives about Fire Alarms that drive you crazy?

Rolling my eyes when a student at my college thought the fire alarm (2901-9838's in continuous) was someone's phone vibrating. I might be only 23, but I was definitely thinking "Kids these days..." That would have to be a pretty big phone to make such a large noise. I really hope he was being sarca...

I can't watch the video with sound right now, so I don't know if you discuss it in the video. Is the light polarized? Did you put a diode on one of the leads?

Re: What keyboard and mouse do you use?

Not withstanding my idiotic contributions to this thread three years ago, I now use a 90s Lenovo keyboard. It has a buckling spring keyboard like the IBM Model M or the Wheelwriter. It's actually a pretty nice keyboard; the only problem is it has an old DIN connector. I have it hooked up in a DIN>PS...

Re: Which company has the best style of walk test?

Although I am not a technician who works on systems for a living, Simplex walk test seems the most intuitive.

I don't even think EST panels have built in walk test modes. Maybe a tech can confirm this.

I'll never forget our old friend, the overhead projector:
On a similar note, whenever you walked into the classroom and saw the big rolling TV cart there, you knew class was going to be fun.
