Re: Rare Smoke Detectors

The second detector in that 1981 video is a JC Penney. I have a Nortron TR88 (AC model) in my collection and it does resemble this detector however the Nortron units are much smaller. I also do believe they were only made and available in Canada.

Re: Alarms on TV/Movies

Just watched the movie called Precious from 2009. Seen the movie a few times but never noticed this until now but the doorbell in the apartment sounds like a First Alert SA76RS. It is in the scene around 8 minutes and 45 seconds were the principal is buzzing up to their apartment wanting to talk to ...

Re: Rare Smoke Detectors

Welcome to the forum, those older detectors in my opinion were much better than the ones of today. The older ones had the louder electromechanical or squealers horns as opposed to piezos used today. The older horns were much louder and more effective but with a detector that old is not to have it in...

Re: Rare Smoke Detectors

One more mention that third wire that is not hooked up was the line cord that could hook up to 20 units (yes 20 and back then that would have been something) so that if one went off so would all the others. I know I couldn't sleep through that. I also found the AC sound way more powerful than the DC...

Re: Rare Smoke Detectors

Hey guys well I finally got my First Alert SA76RS tested with candle smoke last weekend. I did it wall mounted and cover off and it sounded within about 2 seconds. Also had the candle lit a few seconds before I blew it out and oh yes it worked and it sounds a bit louder smoke tested then tested via ...

Re: Alarms on TV/Movies

If you are talking about the episode of White Shadow titled spare the rod you can see a shot of the smoke detector between 39:12 and 39:16. It definitely looks like a Sears Early One to me. Even though smoke detectors were very much available back then seeing them on episodes of TV shows were a rare...

Trying to smoke test an old First Alert SA76RS

Hi guys as most of you know last October I acquired an old First Alert SA76RS smoke detector serial number 415115 meaning it has to be an earlier model going back to 1977. I am able to successfully set it off by pushing the button and I have done with both cover on and off and I love the high pitche...

Re: Alarms on TV/Movies

Just watched an episode of the White Shadow episode titled Spare The Rod dated February 17, 1979. When Ken Carver goes over to visit the Robinson household what appears to be a Sears Early One smoke detector can be seen on the ceiling in the living room of their home. The cover is too big to be a F...

Re: Rare Smoke Detectors

If you said it was big it could a Teledyne Waterpik smoke alarm. Those are circa 1975 and by far the biggest smoke alarms I have seen on video that is and they have a classic squealer horn. They resemble a space ship. Never saw one in person but I would love to own one. Another one that comes to min...

Re: Rare Smoke Detectors

If you can get a pic of the smoke detector I would love to see it. I am interested in older 1970's models with the old fashioned squealer horns. I used to be terrified of them as a child. If you are not interested in keeping it I wouldn't mind taking it. This forum is how I got my First Alert SA76RS.

Re: Alarms on TV/Movies

Hey everyone I am back on the fire alarm forum after being away for a bit as I moved. My former landlord sold the house and in all honesty after nearly 11 years I think this move was for the best. My health actually improved. I have settled into the new apartment very quickly and again another basem...
