Smoke detector shelf life

We all know that residential ionization smoke alarms are supposed to last 10 years. But many ion detectors out in the field were installed decades ago. Are there different guidelines for commercial detectors, or is it simply a case of "it's not actually broke, so don't fix it"? Also, is the longevit...

Re: Fire alarms from the 1980s and 1970s sounding like scoreboard buzzers.

The alarms that sound like scoreboard and dryer buzzers are all AC-powered alarms. The reason they sound like that is because of AC current in the United States and Canada oscillates back and forth at a rate of 60 Hz. The horns will vibrate once each half-cycle, causing them to produce a 120 Hz buzz...

Inspector Sands - Pilot

Hey, everyone. I have a new blog idea I'm working on. It'll be a collection of light sci-fi short stories revolving around Sparky Sands, an eccentric and socially awkward fire alarm technician who believes he can talk to the "Spirit of Electricity". He modified a "Synthex 4007ME" panel and added an ...

Control module question

Let's say I had a master-slave panel configuration in a retrofit application. Could I use the old panel as a power supply for the control module that's now controlling my signals and connected to the new main panel?

Re: Who wears ear protection when setting off fire alarms?

Usually not. Most if not all of my alarms aren't loud enough to warrant it, since the sound duration is measured in seconds or minutes. Hearing protection is still good if you don't like listening to loud alarms at full volume. Here's a source I found on safe levels of noise exposure: https://www.as...

Opinion on voice evac and question on speaker current

I watched this video: 67grb6_lX9A And left this comment: This is one of the reasons why I'm not a huge fan of the mandatory use of voice evac systems. A lot of these newer installations seem WAY too quiet, and it seems from your shot of the hallway that the signals may be spaced too widely in additi...

Re: Very old panel acquired

Cool! So you were able to get other devices out of the system. Too bad you don't know the voltage on that horn. I'd love to see it in action.

4263 hex lock

I'm looking to find out what size hex lock the Simplex 4263 coded pull stations (and by extension, my 4252 non-coded station) use.

I was planning on having a new lock piece made for mine, since it's damaged, and I would need to know.

Re: Very old panel acquired

Definitely an AC system. Do you know what devices ran on the system? Or what caused the blackening effect? It looks like some kind of chemical reaction. Anyways, really neat panel!

Re: What's the loudest fire alarm that you've heard?

Loudest I've heard was my own 2901-9806. I have a 120 VAC Adaptahorn that I still need to make a video of, but I think the -9806 is still worse. The Simplex non-coded ∏-bar is pretty loud when you reset it, too.

It's 9/2/19!

Kind of a pointless post. Too bad I didn't buy one and sound it off for the occasion. I guess we'll have to wait until next year for the vertical version. ;)

Re: Have you ever seen a pull station mounted high up?

I was in a skyscraper once, and there were pull stations on the top floor. In all seriousness, I can't remember the last time I saw a high pull station. But I know that Tunxis still has trim plates left over from when their chevrons and T-bars were mounted higher up. Also, would a normal-height pers...
