Weird Fire codes you saw

Share weird fire codes in your area or somewhere else.

So a strange code in Aspen CO or Pitkin County CO is to have two strobes one red and the other yellow above a FDC.
Here are some examples.

These two strobes are above a FDC and the system has a Notifier system with L-series.

Here are two advances. they both say FIRE and the yellow one has a horn. A regular advance is not far away.

The final picture hay two rotating beacons next to an advance.

That’s certainly very interesting. Could there be a difference between when one is flashing vs the other? I know in my area, they just require some sort of sprinkler alarm to indicate the location of the FDC. It’s usually a 120v horn/strobe from Potter, Wheelock, or System Sensor or a 120v bell on older buildings.

In Florida they require some sort of sprinkler system structure in front of every building. There are two valves in series and they are locked together.

In the example below there is a FDC and another shut off (which I think is for the FDC).

This is not that weird – most places require backflow prevention on NFPA 13 and 13R systems (and some on 13D too). The only reason it looks odd in Florida is that they wind up outside to save costs as you don’t have to worry about them freezing up the way you do in most other parts of the USA.

But why is there two valves?

Because you need to be able to shut off both sides of a backflow preventer to test it properly. All testable backflow prevention assemblies will have valves on both the inlet and the outlet. (This is not far off from the vacuum breaker on a lawn irrigation system, if you have one of those)
