Is it illegal to have security cameras in libraries?

I’ve heard that having security cameras in libraries is illegal for privacy reasons. Is that the case? The local libraries don’t have any visible cameras.

If there is any illegality, it would have to be illegal regionally. At my former job, we installed cameras for the city government. They were installed in full view at the court house, tax collector offices, and libraries.

I was going to say why would it be illegal, but thinking about it, I’ve never seen a camera in a public library. Maybe you’re on to something with your question. I hope someone knows more about this.

Of course not. You have can security cameras in any public place.

They probably see most libraries as extremely low risk so they just don’t bother.

I would think the libraries would want to have cameras to protect against theft of library books or DVDs.
