EAS on Midland Weather Radio

Howdy. I was recently thinking about getting a Midland weather radio for both here and when I move to Stillwater, OK. I know that you can program what SAME frequencies they detect, but aside from weather alerts, can they pick up other EAS messages and EANs? (If need be)

According to the NOAA web site - “NWR is an “All Hazards” radio network, making it your single source for comprehensive weather and emergency information. In conjunction with Federal, State, and Local Emergency Managers and other public officials, NWR also broadcasts warning and post-event information for all types of hazards – including natural (such as earthquakes or avalanches), environmental (such as chemical releases or oil spills), and public safety (such as AMBER alerts or 911 Telephone outages).”

On a side note, the home page on my browser is this: http://www.nws.noaa.gov/largemap.php

I like it because it gives me an overview of the entire US but also a good overview of the region I live in. This map not only has weather related events, but also shows child abduction alerts, nuclear power plant warnings, and 911 outage emergencies (which apparently there is one in central Michigan right now). All the different alerts are here: http://www.weather.gov/help-map

Thanks.
I wonder when FA companies will integrate weather radio and/or EAS features in their mass notification solutions. It certainly would be handy alerting everyone in the building to a weather emergency automatically, without having to manually activate the mass notification system.

it’s already possible. most evac systems can take an audio input in, you just have to have the right eas system to output the message to the FA system. there’s a lot of mass notification systems out there now that integrate with fire alarm systems.

that being said, i’ve never seen a weather radio integrated directly into the FA/MASS system. i’ve seen it done with other systems though.

Didn’t Simplex introduce an ENDEC that could be built into the voice evacuation system?

Yes, the 4907-9101 NEWS Receiver integrates with a 4100U or 4100ES audio system. There is a special audio chipset file that contains messages that mesh with the radio messages. Programming can be fully automatic operation or be controlled by on site security personnel.
