Allowed to use a burglar panel as a fire panel (commercial) in NJ?

In New Jersey, is it legal for a commercial building (maybe for a building that is grandfathered in). To use a burglar panel as a communicator for low voltage smokes without any fire panel?

Thank you

Hi! To answer this question, some more information is needed. What kind of building is this? Is it small like a gas station convenience store or is it big like a museum? Different size buildings have different requirements. Also, are these smokes for meeting requirements or are they only for additional protection?

Probably not. NFPA 72 requires fire alarm systems to include things that a standard security alarm system cannot provide, such as multiple phone lines or dedicated fire notification circuits. And security alarm systems are typically not listed as a commercial fire alarm system by UL or other nationally recognized testing laboratories.

I can’t answer whether your use and type of building actually requires a fire alarm system. You will need to consult your locally adopted codes and local fire officials to determine this.
