Mix of red Wheelock AS's and white SpectrAlert Clas

A JCPenney store at a local mall has a mix of red Wheelock AS’s and white SpectrAlert classic NA’s on the ceiling. They have about as many of one NA as they have of the other NA. Seems strange. Why is this?

That’s a little strange indeed. Perhaps one type belongs to a system for the entire mall while the other belongs to a system for just the store. It shouldn’t really be done that way but sometimes chain stores have particular standards that may conflict with a mall’s existing system, or vice versa.

They have a White SpectrAlert remote strobe in the restroom. I’m thinking that maybe the Wheelock AS’s are disconnected. Some of the are located pretty close to the SpectrAlert NAs. They are wall mount Wheelock AS’s on the ceiling. Maybe the store got a new fire alarm system and never removed the old NAs.
