Fire Alarms at UAlbany

Well, for the first time this summer, I decided to take a walk over to State Quad to see how the fire alarm upgrades are going. By the looks of things, they’re just about done. However what dorms got upgraded was somewhat different from which dorms the website said would be upgraded. The new installations were indeed from Simplex. They did replace the somewhat new alarm system in Steinmentz Hall (was a CP MXL with U-MMTs). I peeked through the windows and the signals are now TrueAlerts and they replaced the MXL annunciator in the front with a Simplex 4603-9101 LCD annunciator. They also replaced the smokes with TrueAlarms and the dual-action pulls with single-action T-bars. It doesn’t look like they moved anything around or added new devices, they just replaced the devices that were previously in place. Melville Hall hasn’t been touched (also an MXL system with NSs and RSSs), and being as it’s now this late in the summer, I don’t think it will be upgraded, and there’s really no need for it to be. I peeked through the window there too and saw the annunciator and the power LED was on and the system was normal, so I guess that system won’t be upgraded afterall. Also, they also went the same way Indian Quad went and installed TrueAlert horn/strobes and a mix of TrueAlert remote strobes and RSSs. I didn’t take a close enough look inside the rooms to see whether they installed smokes with sounders. I’ll have to do that next time.

Interesting, and very weird how Steinmentz Hall had a decent up-to-code CP system replaced with a Simplex system (I DID hear about problems with some CP systems like those, maybe that’s why it got removed?) As for the mix of Simplex and CP/Siemens on your college’s dorm systems, that kinda reminds me of Bridgewater State College’s dorms; some are Simplex, but others are EST. However, practically all of the academic-related buildings have Simplex systems (ranging from 4051+4050-80s to TrueAlert speaker/strobes).
