New System Sensor Notification Series!

Arrgh! Why does it sound the same!

I agree. Those weak points on the sides where the screws are look like they’ll snap at any moment.

For some reason, I gotta say that the advance horn within the L-series alarms seems to sound a little lower pitched. I’m unsure why that is…

Maybe they just enhanced the tone? To make it more sound penetrable… or meet code requirements.

I think it was the code requirements.

I just watched System Sensor | Honeywell Building Technologies System Sensor’s webinar on the L series and basically the 15/75 setting is no longer valid:
WARNING: Deep technical info.
(Copied from the FAQ slide at 39:38)

Prior to 2005 the 15/75 cd rating was relevant since the NFPA 72 and ADAAG had different requirements.
•
ADAAG referenced ANSI/UL 1638 which only considers strobe performance on-axis
  •
NFPA referenced ANSI/UL 1971 which considered performance at various angles. A 15/75 cd device is equivalent to a 15 cd device since it only provides 6 cd at 60-degrees
  •
As of 2010 the Department of Justice (DOJ) published the 2010 ADA requirements, which harmonized the requirements with the 2002 edition of NFPA 72, thus the 15/75 cd is no longer valid. The 15 cd strobe is the standard setting for typical small spaces like hallways.

Also interestingly, they say the new backplate is flimsier so that if you overtighten it, it’ll flex instead of breaking. I’ll leave you to decide whether that’s a feature or an excuse.

I know people have been wondering what is going to happen to the advance and when, but I just received something in System Sensor’s newsletter that states that:
-All of the Advance devices that the L Series directly replaces are discontinued
-All Low Frequency Devices, Outdoor Devices, Mini Horns, and MNS Strobe plates and ā€œRelated Devicesā€ will still be made

Seeing how so many people seem to mindlessly hate the advance, I don’t see why people like it all of a sudden.

The L series sounds the same as the Advance on its default tone; so we’ll still be able to hear the ear splitting tone in new installations. There really isn’t a difference besides the changeable lenses and the new tone option and their appearance in general.

I’m hoping that some installations will use the new tone.

Me too. Wouldn’t it be nice to get away from the ear splitting Advance tone? Unfortunately due to the 520hz requirements on all new Fire Alarm signals I don’t think we’d see it much and even then the Advance tone is the default and many places don’t even bother changing it. At least I believe 520 zh is now required on all regular signals…maybe that still only applies to low frequency devices.

Also 4-wire advances are still in retail

i’m not sure why 4 wire is still a thing.

    RETROFITSSSSSSSS

They could’ve just made a 4 wire l series devices…excuse my grammar it’s early and I have PARCC

shouldn’t even need it then. you can abandon one of the pairs and use the other for a 2 wire device.

most 4 wires you can jumper anyways and use as a 2 wire.

Its for situations where a singular device has failed, because replacing all of them would be stupid.

well when you do a retrofit you’re going to replace all of the devices.

Not really. You would be supprised.

On a full retrofit it is likely that all the devices will be replaced. It is likely that devices will be added on a full retrofit because the AHJ might require update to current code.

However, on a service call to replace one A/V that failed during inspection, it will be just that device replaced. 4-wire device replaced with 4-wire device is the quickest and easiest. 4-wire devices are still needed.
