Oh and look what else I found on eBay:
A Universal Smoke Signal SS-750C:
Interesting. I have a Firex FXW-1A from around 1987. It has the clear domed test button. (It also has interconnect).
Wow!! That’s the first clear picture I’ve seen of a Universal Smoke Signal. I know they had an old one that looked kind of like a First Alert, but it wasn’t clear how it actually looked.
I actually have seen one of those Universal Smoke Signal alarms, it was in a friend’s upstairs hallway. I don’t remember if it had an electronic or mechanical horn.
I actually have always wondered if those 3 units at my church were interconnected, but I know the Earli-Gard EGD-5S doesn’t have interconnect features and I don’t think the FX1020 does either. So most likely they aren’t interconnected. Anyway, I bought the Sears! It should be here on or before Saturday and of course I will make an unboxing and testing video.
That would be the SS-700. It’s basically the Probe 101 but with the vents going all the way to the center, unlike the 3 rows on the 101. They also had a later model that had large squarish vents along the outer edge of the face rather than the curved vents. I saw one tested in one of those “door-to-door alarm testing” videos a while ago, and our family friend’s friends had one in their home.
Ah, so were USS and Probe partnering in the late 70’s early 80’s?
Evidently.
What year is the FX1020 from?
I’d say it’s from sometime in the early 80’s. That section of the building was built in 1959.
The FireX FX1020 has interconnect. My old house had them. I don’t think the FX1014 does though, as I saw a video on YouTube of one from 1981, and that didn’t have interconnect
In that case, there is a small possibility that it is interconnected to the 1839ACI. Thanks! I can’t test it because it’s waaay to high to reach.
Okay so I got one of the BRK 1839ACI’s last weekend, and I will post pics and a video soon, hopefully in the next few days. I also have a Southwest Laboratories (Probe) 202. I will do the same with that one.
Cool! Did you open the other one?
Not yet. I think I will right now, though. I expect the same mess in the battery compartment.
Surprisingly, the other one didn’t have nearly as much corrosion! The battery just had a brown cruddy spot on it, but came right out. The terminals were fine on the detector side. It worked great and sounded just like the other one (When it worked).
Man that battery is really bad, I’ve never had one fall apart like that. Anyways there are ways to clean the corrosion off using an abrasive (nail file, emery board, sandpaper), a cotton swab and vinegar/baking soda. At least that’s what came up on Google when I searched.
Yeah I tried using baking soda and vinegar. It kind of worked… The other smoke detector barely has any corrosion on its terminals so I will be using that one from now on.
