2GIG Smoke Detector Fault

Some people may remember that I installed a 2GIG GC2 system in my grandparents’ house a little over a year ago. For the most part, it has been working great, but there has been one ongoing issue that has been extremely annoying to deal with.

The issue that I was having is that the tamper buttons on the 2GIG SMKT3-345 smoke/heat/freeze detectors were not getting fully pushed in. Because of this, they were going in and out of tamper trouble. The issue was that, over the 13 years these detectors have existed, the springy tabs on the bases that hold down the tamper buttons have lost their springiness. I tried to remedy this by bending the tabs, but that only made the problem worse.

I ended up fixing this issue by breaking off the tabs completely so that the detectors are always in tamper trouble mode. After I acknowledged the troubles on the panel, I put the detectors back up and everything remained silenced. I made sure to check that the detectors function completely normally even when in tamper mode.

Has anyone seen this issue? Even though they are 13 years old, I feel like this is a bit of a design flaw, especially since it happened to all 3 detectors on the system and security system smoke detectors do not tend to get replaced every 10 years as long as they function properly.
