On Standard Electric Time vibrating bells, volume may be adjusted by loosening the plunger stroke adjuster in the following manner.
THIS ASSUMES THE STANDARD ELECTRIC TIME BELL IS MOUNTED WITH THE PLUNGER FACING UPWARDS.
Remove the gong by loosening its bolt, and set the gong and bolt aside.
The plunger stroke adjuster is at the bottom of the bell; it adjusts how loud the bell will sound while ringing.
Check to see that the threaded shaft is not rusted.
The tools needed are pictured below:
-
Place the socket end over the 3/8" nut.
-
Place the large slotted screwdriver blade in the slot to keep the threaded shaft from moving.
-
Using the box wrench, turn the nut left (counter-clockwise), until it loosens and turns.
-
Turn the threaded shaft to the left to move the plunger down, away from the gong. (This will cause the bell volume to be lower, and change the sound.
-
Turn the threaded shaft to the right to move the plunger closer to the gong, which will increase the volume of the ringing bell.
-
Re-tighten the nut on the threaded shaft after setting the volume level.
-
Visually check the plunger position, the plunger tip should be visible just under the gong, but not touching it.
-
If the plunger is adjusted too close to the gong, you will a “CLUNK SOUND” meaning the plunger is in contact with the gong.
Ideally the plunger tip should be just below the gong so that it will produce resonant sound during operation, and just after shutting off.
