Been watching some old Family Guy episodes. In A Very Special Family Guy Freakin’ Christmas

Brian goes to the kitchen to take the turkey out of the oven, since the Griffins are shopping. An ember shoots out of the fireplace and onto the carpet. As Brian is looking for an oven mitt, the http://www.pond5.com/sound-effect/8697497/alarm-smoke-detector.html stock 5/6 Smoke Alarm sound effect is heard and then the alarm is shown. It’s drawn to look like a FireX FX-1B (basically the battery powered brother of the FXW-1A/FX1020, it also was relabeled by Sunbeam, React and Norton in Canada) This would fit the actual alarm since the FX-1Bs did to 5/6, and later ones probably did 4/6.
On a new episode of Tosh.o, they were showing a guy lifting weights and there was some bell on the wall.
Btw the guy dropped a weight on him and got KOd
In the latest Simpsons “Treehouse of Horror” special, in Bart’s classroom, Bart and Lisa find a desk with mysterious ancient writing on it. Among decoding it, the desk opens and a fiery hand pulls them down into Hades. Then the hand comes up again, goes over to a conveniently-located pull station with a large “FIRE ALARM” sign in the back of the classroom (in the T-bar style, as always) and pulls it, setting off the school bells, to which Skinner yells “Simpson!” offscreen (given Bart’s history of false fire alarms.) At least it didn’t set off the sprinklers this time!
They really need to get a better fire alarm sound to use on the show instead of just ringing the school bells. Even if they use the sound of a 10" bell or something (like the school bell sound they USED to use, still heard in the intro), it would still be more realistic than just the school bell. But then again, Springfield Elementary IS an underfunded school with a lot of obsolete stuff, so their fire alarm system is probably just that too (the panel is probably an old Simplex 4207 or 4208, given the pull stations.)
Some kids’ show on Disney :? was on at a Pizza Hut and their school had screwed alarms that make no sense. In the hallways they have Edwards Dual Action SIGA Pulls and System Sensor Low Frequency sounder Strobes-weird. Classrooms have wheelock ZNS’s and Edwards 270-SPO Classic Pulls. The cafeteria has FireLite BG-12’s and Simplex 8" bells. These alarms just don’t match.
They shoot the shows in actual schools sometimes. But this is most likely, so they probably got alarms from retired studios like the ZNSs, 270-SPOs, Simplex 8" bells, and possibly the BG-12s.
I agree with firealarminc’s guess above on how the Frankenstein system came to be, but it’s also not uncommon to have multiple vendors in a school like that. Public schools want whoever’s cheapest at the time so you end up with spaghetti systems like that occasionally.
Some dealers also switch what they sell/install over time as products and codes change. I haven’t seen bells installed in a long time, so don’t expect them to be around much longer. It’s tough to get them from Wheelock these days for sprinkler bells. As for the EST with BG-12’s, well EST was bought out a few years ago so maybe a dealer wasn’t happy with the new agreements and jumped ship. There’s lots of reasons why different products get used over time!
People like to bash the proprietary systems, but it prevents stuff like this from happening and guarantee’s a life safety system that’s compatible and commissioned by someone who’s qualified.
I saw the Equalizer yesterday. Awesome action flick. It’s R-rated though, because of language, violence, and suggestive themes.
The Home Depot-esque store has three EST FireShields, all in trouble, with 270-SPOs and BG-12LXs (for some reason, probably two separate sets)
The signals were Wheelock ASs and Integrities. There was a scene where it was set off after an explosion, and the sprinklers all activated (typical…) No strobes, and it was a generic horn in Pulse.
A restaurant had a Fire-Lite panel (It looked like an MS-5024UD) with an RSG RMS-1T and Gentex Commander 2/3
Not actual TV, but in S3E5 of VGHS there’s the sound of either 2 fast 4/6/Gentex smokes or 2 PA400s, a 10" Bell and Simplex Slow Chime. No alarms shown, but different FA devices show up at other parts in the series.
Hi everyone I am new to this board. I also have an interest in vintage fire/smoke alarms. Mainly older 1970’s units. I doesn’t look like this was brought up in this forum yet but a while back I watched an episode of Eight Is Enough titled “You Won’t Have Nicholas To Kick Around Anymore”. The episode is originally a two parter and it is from November 1978. This episode featured an old General Electric Home Sentry smoke detector. In this episode Nicholas accidently sets fire to his room. After that happens Tom installs the detector but the sound is dubbed in as it sounds like a bell ringing and not a continuous buzz like smokes of that era often did. I have tried looking for this episode online but I haven’t been able to find it. But I think that is one of the earliest shows to feature smoke detectors. I don’t recall anything before that featuring them although I could be wrong. There was also an earlier Eight Is Enough episode from 1977 to feature a Honeywell alarm and it had a more accurate buzz sound.
