Are fire alarm strobes required to have a fire label?

There’s a store the local mall the has two white Siemens horn/strobes without the fire label. I didn’t know they were fire alarms at first, then I went into the store and saw a pull station. I would think that a fire label would be required, especially on a white device.

Nope. In the beginning many horns didn’t have the “FIRE” label on them. The Simplex 40XX series, the 2903 series, Edwards Adaptahorns, Wheelock 34T and 34 didn’t have the word “FIRE” written on them. The only way that they would be labeled like that is if they were put on a strobe or light plate because strobes and light plates often had that label. Though there are some exceptions there also as the 4050-8X light plates originally didn’t have the “FIRE” lettering and neither did any Space Age Electronics light plate.

The Cleveland Hopkins International Airport (which has a 4100ES system) with some original devices before they installed all TrueAlertES horn strobes, strobes, and speaker strobes after a 2015 renovation and revitalization project, has Wheelock RSS-24MCW remote strobes in the restrooms of the older section (Terminal B, Concourse B) which hasn’t undergone major renovations. They have the red beauty plates, but these plates lack ‘FIRE’ lettering. There’s two strobes in the restrooms there. The lettering wasn’t faded, as I could see no presence of the lettering ever being there. I thought it was interesting they didn’t just replace everything with TrueAlertES’s but it’s probably more cost effective for them to tie that section into a 4009 NAC Extender instead.

At least in New York, it’s not uncommon for large buildings with EVAC systems to get “ALERT” labels with standard strobes. Most state buildings with systems installed in the past few years(state university campuses included) have this setup.

Of course, then you get the EST Genesis, which doesn’t have a FIRE label unless requested. I think NY requires a label of some sort, because I almost never see the no label version in this state.

if its a mass notification system, they have to say alert or something besides fire.

the code says a fire label can only be used for fire strobes, and nothing else, however, fire strobes aren’t required to actually say fire.
