Hi. Needing to replace all my hardwired First Alert SC70170BV smoke detectors and want your opinion on the best replacements for them that are Smart/Wifi capable. I been calling First Alert support but their voicemail says they are on holiday and it hangs up on me. Thoughts?
I personally would not use a “smart” smoke detector given how buggy the Nest Protect was, but since you want to the one that Zach recommended might indeed work best.
If your alarms are interconnected I THINK you should just need the one, but not entirely sure. I’d probably start with one, put it in a central location in your house, and see if your other First Alert alarms trigger the alarm and phone notifications.
First Alert has a pretty good track record compared to Kidde or other smaller names. I feel that’s probably why Google partnered with them to replace Nest. What’s important is that the device matches UL 217 more than anything else. This one is 10th edition certified.
thanks again. Well I looked around and if we have a smart detector in all locations, the notification will tell you which detector is in alarm, even though they will all be going off… So I just got 3 of them to start to dabble and go from there. I can report back here with my findings!!
PLACE Home Solutions (main thread here) also manufactures 10th edition smart smoke/CO alarms, but they also use a 520 Hz tone, which has a better waking effectiveness. I thought these were listed to the 10th edition, but the datasheets only appear to say 9th edition.
Got the three detectors up and running. Very easy to setup. I Can see them from the app. I should get notified if they are triggered. I hope I am never triggered but comforting to know where the smoke is coming from by which detector is triggered. Only thing by not being round, I need to figure out how to keep them square with the walls. I am OCD like that. Otherwise I will be getting more. Thanks for the recommendation!
Happy to hear it! Any chance you managed to test to see if a non-smart detector interconnected would still activate the notification on your phone? Scratch that, it’s literally an advertised feature on their website.
