Duct detector question

Is a duct detector installed on the side were the air blows out of the handler or is it were air is sucked into the handler. Thanks

I believe it is to be mounted near the return-air diffuser. As long as the air-sampling tubes are positioned such that air flows into them, I’d imagine it can be mounted in either place.

If the unit is over 2000CFM you need a duct detector on the supply side before any branches in duct work or at each branch if it can’t be installed before the branch.

You need one on the return side if it’s over 15,000 CFM.

What if the air handler is under 2000CFM.

This depends on the code, it’s swapped in the IBC (so if your area has adopted the IBC it’s on the return side if it’s over 2,000CFM and both sides if it’s over 15,000CFM).

Doesn’t need anything.

You also don’t need duct detectors if the unit is only serving one area or the entire area is covered by area detectors.

Ok thanks
