Well to be fair not many are anywhere near that heavy-duty, so I can see why such an exit sign would be that expensive.

It’s probably an explosionproof exit sign, which is definitely a not-cheap affair – you need much heftier construction and a lot more testing, especially if it’s from the bad old incandescent days due to the fact incandescents run well above the autoignition point of most vapors that could get in.
(Given that you can get a brand new ordinary-indoor-location LED exit sign for $30 or less…don’t treat the OP’s post as representative, folks.)
