This is a recording from my plane of a 4-inch Federal Signal general alarm bell sounding in the jet bridge at Hector International Airport. This bell sounds continuously whenever the jet bridge is moving to notify everyone around to use caution. If you take a flight here, you are guaranteed to hear it sounding at least a few times.
Judging by the sound I’d rather say 10in since smaller gongs have higher pitched sounds.
Yeah, sure sounds like a 10-inch bell to me. Reminds me of the (seemingly) 6-inch bells Toronto Pearson has on its jetways (or at least had at one time), as can be heard in this 1994 episode of “Mighty Machines”:
It certainly does sound like a 10-inch, but I saw the bell in person, and it’s a 4-inch. I do love the sound. Unfortunately, I neglected to take a picture, but here’s one from Federal Signal that shows what it looked like:
One cool thing about these bells is that they, along with the part of the airport they are in, are only a few months old.
What? How is that possible if the laws of sound dictate that the larger a bell’s gong is in diameter, the deeper of a note it produces?
Yeah, nothing like a ringing electric bell for sure, heh.
Ah, one of those.

I’m also confused. Maybe the one heard is not the one I saw in the jet bridge? Maybe there’s another bigger one somewhere else.
