Federal Signal Vibratone 450D B4 problems

I bought one of Andrews mystery boxes and I test all the alarms and all but one work flawlessly. The Vibratone
The Federal Signal Horn doesn’t sound right. I hooked it up to 3 nine volt batteries and It sounds raspy and not clear. There were 4 wires on the horn so I bundled the black with the black and the red with the red.
Is there anything I’m doing wrong here?

Sorry for double post. But I decided it would be best if I uploaded a picture.

It’s got nothing to do with the wires; they are used to wire the horn in parallel with the other horns in the NAC loop.
There should be a volume screw visible on the front of the horn grille. Try loosening it a quarter-turn counterclockwise and see if that works.

Do I remove the red grille? Theres not one on the front. There is a hexagon screw on the back that has a spring on it. Is that it? I should probably wait til Andrew responds since it was his horn and he knows how it was when he sent it.

Yeah, I apologize for that. I was getting the 450D (basically the 9806) confused with the 4051-style Vibratone. Yeah, that’s the volume screw.

Two questions

You’re powering this off 9V batteries – are you sure the batteries are good? A Vibratone 450 draws quite a bit of power.
Second, there is a brass colored bolt on the back of the horn which sits on top of a spring, that is used to adjust the mechanism’s position. Have you tried adjusting it?

I tried it with a 24 power supply and it made that sound. No I haven’t tried adjusting the screw. I will try that.

Sorry for double post but It sounds better now instead of sounding like it’s on FWR it sounds like a pump which I think is the right sound it makes if I remember watching one of Andrews videos.

No problem with the double post. lol.

So that’s all it was then… a few tweaks to the adjustment screw.
