Finally got some new smoke alarms!

My mom found a nearby Red Cross program that gave out free smoke detectors. Feels weird seeing them on the wall instead of the celing though.

I would have gone with dual sensor (ionization & photoelectric) non-10-year-battery BRK/First Alert (seemingly a more reliable brand that Kidde given the difference in the number of recalls between them) detectors, but at least you got something I guess.

I’m shocked how popular Kidde is even with all its recalls.

Do not use red cross or fire department give aways to get alarms for your collection, these are for people that need them.
It’s extremely rude and disrespectful.
Get them from eBay or something else.

It’s common for that. For a house with no fire protection in it can be expensive for them to be installed. Depending on the situation, you would one buy a smoke detector, which are around in today’s economy, 5 to 300+ per unit. If your hardwiring them, you would have to buy a box for the detector and where all the wires go, speaking of wires, you would probably buy some wires. If you don’t have a spare breaker, you would have to buy a breaker. If you can’t do that by yourself, you would need to hire an electrician. Overall installation would cost around $150 all the way to $500 or more. A lot if cities, (including mine), have a program that installs these detectors, for free.

No I mean if you are buying them for your collection, not for life safety usage

I agree, but @s01sauc3 never said this was for a collection. Smoke alarms with 10 year batteries are also not ideal for collections because there is no way to disable them when they are not in use.

Hence why I hate manufacturers slowly starting to sell nothing but those (even if they do provide a better chance for detectors to be working when they’re needed most in actual life safety use).

The PLACE smoke alarms from Gentex don’t have 10 year batteries. I’m not sure if that’s because of the 520 Hz horn, the smart features, or both. Also, I don’t think there are any wireless interconnect smoke alarms with 10 year batteries.
