Fire Alarm Brands In Your City

I can safely assume that Simplex had a large presence in the Providence/Boston area back in the day. There are many Simplex setups from the 70s and 80s still working (Hey, Massholes: think Emerald Square Mall, Silver City Galleria, Massachusetts State House, etc.) but not too many from the 90s or later.

When Tyco bought Simplex in 2001, the service calls most likely became more expensive than before, giving alarm companies a reason to switch to a competitor. This is reflected by the lack of 2000s Simplex setups in my area.

This is only for my area, though. Other places had Simplex installations in the 2000s, which is reflected by local economies.

Massholes??

ADT: Multiple instances of ADT commercial fire alarm installations (before it became Tyco Integrated Security), mostly in stores and other small installations.

EST: It seems like there aren’t that many EST systems in my area, but when I do see them, they are usually in an office building.

Fire-Lite: Very popular in small installs, such as stores, strip malls, and any other small to midsize building that would need a fire alarm system.

Gamewell/FCI: Can only think of one Gamewell/FCI system, they don’t really have a presence

Notifier: Is popular in small installations like Fire-Lite, but also has a presence in many large buildings (the Air Force Academy, for example, has Notifier systems in all of their buildings including very large class room buildings, and indoor arena, etc.)

Siemens (Cerberus Pyrotronics/Faraday): Has almost no presence where I live, can’t think of a single installation off of the top of my head

Silent Knight: Like Fire-Lite, is found in many smaller installations

Simplex: Has a very large presence in the educational market, as well as in many other large buildings. The two biggest colleges, as well as the 2-3 biggest school districts, have Simplex in most of their buildings (there are some exceptions, of course - my school, and one other school in my district have Notifier systems). The airport, them mall, multiple office buildings, etc. have Simplex systems as well.

Simplex for large buildings and schools ADT for small places. Crime Prevention is based in our town so they do security.

LOL, Massholes.

You wouldn’t understand, its a local thing.

Last time I was in the Emerald Square Mall they had Simplex institutional pulls. It remains the only place I’ve seen those.

Any Idea why they would have those?

My city has a mix of everything. The newer stores and recently renovated places have Fire-Lite systems with BG-12s, and Spectralert Advances.

prevents unauthorized people from randomly pulling the pulls.

malls don’t like fire alarms going off, causes lots of problem. if people find out there’s a fire in the food court, all of a sudden everyone rushes to the food court to watch.

I’m 14 and I known since I was born to get the (insert “F,H or other word of choice here” )out!!! If there’s a fire I’m gonna haul ass out of there and run very far away. XD

I actually see a LOT of EST systems in Boston. Most fire alarm systems I see are EST, Simplex and the Honeywell stuff (like Fire-Lite and Notifier.) The building I had my job training program at had an EST system with Integrity and Genesis horn/strobes.
Siemens is definitely rare in Boston. I’ve only seen one or two of their systems. And I also mentioned South Station had a Kidde voice-evac system, but now it’s a Simplex 4100U system (they still have many of the old Wheelock speaker/strobes, Kidde pulls and smokes, though!)

Here in Brockton, it varies. Fire-Lite, Notifier and Silent Knight are common, especially in stores, restaurants and smaller businesses (though some schools and Massasoit Community College also have Notifier systems.) We do have several Simplex systems, but they’re not as common (and it’s a mix of old and new stuff; many newer Simplex systems are typically found retrofitted into older buildings here.) With the exception of one middle school (built in 1954 with an Edwards system originally), all of the Brockton school buildings built in the 1950s and 1960s originally had Gamewell systems; some of them are still in use while others were replaced (typically with Notifier voice-evac.) I’ve seen a few other Gamewell systems as well, but the older ones are slowly disappearing. There is some Edwards and EST, particularly in the schools that were built since 1998, all of which have EST voice-evac systems.

  1. Massholes:For residents of Massachusetts, it is an achieved title for drving faster, being wreckless, cutting other drivers off often, and having no patience for other drivers on the road.

  2. For non-residents of Massachusetts, it is a term of dislike for the people of Massachusetts that drive like an asshole.

In Chicago and surrounding areas, pretty much most schools have Simplex 4100+, 4020, 4100U, or new 4100ES. Most large buildings in the downtown area are Simplex, occasionally you will come across something different but it’s rare. As for small businesses, I’d say Firelite seems to be pretty popular.

Speaking of Chicago, when I went there I saw a Gentex SHG/GOS and SImplex pull station with break glass slots (No glass), and at the top of the John Hancock Center I saw a Wheelock LSM.

Boston tends to have a lot of Simplex, new and old. Logan Airport has one or more 4001u panels with a mixture of TrueAlert and 4903 series devices. Same with the aquarium and TD Garden. Many stores in Faneuil Hall have 4051s with 4050-84 light plates and either older 4251s or Chevrons. As to the Masshole comment, I am a proud Masshole

The Best Buy on 13 Mile and Gratiot in Roseville, MI has a Simplex 4005 system.

In Northern Mass (another proud masshole here) Simplex still gets the majority of buildings with a Fire-Lite thrown in here and an EST there.
