The recently-opened Planet Fitness near my college (my brother goes there every week) has a fire alarm system by a company I never even heard of until today. They have an “Advanced”-branded system (probably the Axis AX series) with these https://us.advancedco.com/media/1850399/Intelligent%20Polycarbonate%20Pull%20Station.pdf weird polycarbonate pull stations that seem to be knock-offs of the BG-12. The alarm signals are Gentex SSPK24CLP ceiling-mount speaker/strobes. Definitely not a common setup around here. Interestingly, this is in the same space that used to have Gentex GMS horn/strobes slapped onto Simplex 2903 plates (and a couple that had their old 2901-9833 horns intact). I was expecting them to go with another Fire-Lite or Notifier system with SpectrAlert Advances, but I sure was surprised…

As long as it isn’t the same old boring common vanilla SpectrAlert Advance setups then I am pretty happy.

My school is a Jr/Sr High School and has an EST3 system. The alarms are Edwards MB6-24 bells on EST 403-5A-R strobe plates. These are installed in every hallway, the library computer area, and even the change rooms! In the band room, the CTS workshop, and the gym have Edwards MB10-24 bells on the same strobe plates. When the alarms go in the gym, they put wire covers on the 10’ bells. Pulls are all 270-SPOs

NOTE: The pulls are EST SIGA-270s. The smokes are EST SIGA PS. Outside are 3 MB6-24s (one by the hill by the front entrance, one near the tarmac, and one near the CTS workshop’s garage), there is also an EST Integrity remote strobe near the bike rack. When the bells are outside, they put an Edwards Adaptahorn beside them. All strobes sync, and all alarms are set to Code 3.

Lockdown strobes are amber, and are located anywhere a MB10-24 is.

A couple systems from my recent travels:

DoubleTree Binghamton (Binghamton, NY)

Panel: Simplex 4100U at the front desk with EVAC microphone
Smokes: Simplex 2098-series smoke detectors. Detectors in rooms on sounder bases.
Pulls: Simplex 4251-30s (break glass). One 2099-9762 (key-operated only) is on each floor near the elevators. I’m assuming it’s a two-stage system and the -9762 bypasses to the second stage.
Speakers: Some areas have TrueAlert speaker/strobes. No NAs visible other than standard PA-type speakers in most of the building. Being as there is no music on the upper floors, I’m assuming the FA system is wired into the speakers.

Hilton Garden Inn (Fishkill, NY)
Panel: Unidentified Cerberus panel behind front desk
Smokes: Unidentified Cerberus smokes
Pulls: Cerberus MS-51s or similar
NAs: Wheelock NSes

My elementary school before June 2014 had an EST 6616 system with mostly Wheelock MBS-G10-24 bell/strobes. By one of the 2nd grade classrooms was an Edwards 439D-10AWC bell on an EST 403-5A-R strobe plate, probably a replacement. Near the emergency exit (a grade 4 classroom is also located there) was an Edwards 439D-6AWC bell on a Simplex 4903-9101 strobe plate (with the strobe on top, very rare). Outside there were 2 Edwards 439D-10AWC remote bells outside, (one by the front entrance, one by the grade 1 doors.) Pulls were all Edwards 270-SPOs, and there is a classic one (with the shield logo) by the 6 inch bell/strobe!. Smoke were Edwards, and heat detectors were Edwards too. System did continuous. Now there is a Vigilant VS-51
panel, all the signals were replaced with Edwards EG1R-HDVM (genesis, red, no fire lettering) horn/strobes on double signal plates, and some on regular plates. These are installed everywhere, even in the classrooms, and the small time in room! Outside the bell by the Grade 1 doors is gone, no signal replaced it, and where the other bell was is an Edwards WG4RF-HVMC horn/strobe (red, FIRE lettering). Other parts from the original system are still intact.

I find that its rarer for me to see a Simplex 4903-9101 strobe that is on the bottom rather than the top. I only saw the strobe on the bottom of one once and that was in my high school cafetorium kitchen.

Simplex 4051, yes they really are.

ONE MORE THING I FORGOT TO ADD TO MY POST ABOUT MY ELEMENTARY SCHOOL IS THAT THE CURRENT SYSTEM DOES CODE 3
Here are some alarm systems that I have seen

Wilderness Village’s lodge has an Edwards 1527 system. The only signal I saw was an Edwards 6100D Durabel, 10 inches in size. The pull stations are Edwards 270-SPO (one with shield logo, one without) in the small store. The Lodge Lounge’s pull stations are Edwards 275-Cs. They also have heat detectors everywhere. I don’t understand why there’s no signals inside.

The CO-OP Marketplace in Rocky Mountain House has a Simplex system of some sort, with Edwards 439D-6AWC bells on EST 403-5A-R strobe plates. Pulls were all Simplex 4099-9001/2099-9754. I’m guessing Simplex didn’t have any bells, so they had to get it from Edwards/EST. The garden center has a Notifier AFP-200 with System Sensor SpectrAlert P1224MC horn/strobes. The pulls were all Notifier NFM-950B.

On 2903s and those 4903s you can flip the lens and install them upside down. They weren’t made with the strobe on the bottom.

Yeah. That is what I meant. The 4903s at my elementary school and all but one in my high school has the strobe on the top. Only the one in the cafetorium kitchen (to my knowledge) was installed with he tense flipped.

Here are some more.

The Holiday Inn in Grande Prairie has a Mircom FX-2000 system with Mircom FHS-240 horn strobes. They are white in the rooms, and red in the hallways. When the alarms are in the rooms, they put a Mircom silenceable horn under the horn/strobe. Pulls were all MIRCOM MS-501

The Tony Roma’s in Banff has an unknown Notifier system with red wallmount System Sensor SpectrAlert Advances. Pulls were all Notifier NBG-12LX. The candy store also has the same system as Tony Roma’s.

The Gondola Place (where you get on first) has an EST 6616 system with Edwards 439D-6AWC bells on EST-403-5A-R strobe plates. On one pole had a bell strobe on one side, and an EST 202-5A-T strobe on the other! In the place where you get on, there’s an Edwards 439D-10AWC bell, and beside it is an EST Integrity Remote strobe. Pulls were all Edwards 270-SPO. In the other building, which has the skywalk and the way to the glacier/ice explorers, they have some EST system, with Edwards bell/strobes the same. In the store, they have an EST mini horn/strobe, and in a hallway, there’s an Edwards 6’ Durabel on an EST 403-5A-R! (That is so very very rare) In the gondola area to go back, there is EST 757-5A-T horn/strobe’s there! Pulls were the usual 270-SPO.

I figure if i’m gonna keep posting in this topic I might as well do a system that some members will actually know about.

John Hancock Center | Chicago, IL | Built in: 1969
Much of the fire alarm system consists of Wheelock ET-1080 speaker/strobes and speakers (many of which are painted the color of the wall/ceiling behind them), and -LSM strobes. I spotted a few Exceder strobes on the observation deck, as well as a Simplex 2901-9806 horn, which I’m assuming isn’t part of the fire alarm system. I’m also going to make an educated guess and assume that based on the size and age of the building, there’s also probably some E-series speakers and speaker/strobes. The panel (panels) is (are) more than likely Cerberus Pyrotronics or Siemens.

Here’s more!

Roots in Banff has a Notifier system, with the only signal a Notifier KMS-6-24VDC/P bell on a Wheelock LSP-24-VFR strobe plate. The only pull is a Notifier NFM-950B. The Boston Pizza in the same place has an EST system with EST Genesis horn/strobes (red, no FIRE lettering). Pulls were GE EST SIGA-270. A small mall has an EST 6616 system with Edwards 6’ Durabels. In one place, a Durabel broke down and was replaced with an Edwards 439D-6AWC. Pulls were all Edwards 270-SPO (with shield logo).

The Mount St. Francis Retreat Center near Cochrane has a Simplex 4008 system, with Simplex TrueAlert Horn/Strobes. Pulls were all Simplex 4099-9001.

One more from my Banff trip is the Banff Springs Hotel! It has a two-stage Simplex 4100 panel, with white Wheelock ET-1070-LSM speaker strobes for the most part. They are installed in the Stanley Thompson Wing halls and hotel rooms and the main lobby. In the Alhambra Room, the Alberta Room, and the other parts, have Simplex 2902-9734 LifeAlarm speakers! Some with 4904-9101 strobes, but alot with out. One of the strobes was intalled horizontally and had “FIRE” sideways! They all have that on 3 sides. Sometimes you will see Wheelock E90-24MCW-FW speaker/strobes as replacements. In the swimming pool area and some areas close, it has Wheelock WS1T-24 strobes. in the basement entrance, you will see the panel, and Wheelock ET-1070-WST speaker strobes. (the hotel was built in 1887, it alarm system was installed in the 80’s, then replaced mid-90s) In some areas, you will see Simplex ceiling speakers, 4 inches round baffles in the rooms, and some 8 inch round, but alot of them are square baffles, and installed on walls and ceilings. Sometimes you will see a Simplex 4904-9101 strobe near them too. There is also a TOA BS-1030W speaker in the pool area, also part of the alarm system. Pulls were a mix of old and new Simplex 4099-9001 two-stage, and 4251-20 dual-stage.

The other side, has a Simplex 4100 normal system, but instead of speakers, it has bells. The bells were Simplex 2901-9723, with Simplex 4904-9101 strobes with 3 fire letterings. Near the doors of that building, there is a Simplex 2901-9722 bell on a Wheelock RSSP-24MCW strobe plate. In the bowling area, there is Simplex 2901-9332 or 9711 bells with the Simplex 4904-9101 strobes, but these have two letterings. Pulls were all 4251-20.

The Ski Tip Lodge there has a Notifier system, with Notifier KMS-10-24VDC bells, and one replacement, an Edwards 439D-10AWC bell. Pulls are all Notifier NFM-950B. The bar has an EST 6616 system with Edwards 439D-10AWC bells. Pulls are all Edwards 274-111. I am going back there in March, so any systems I missed, will be posted on here.

New Heights School has an EST system, with Edwards MB10-24 bells on EST 403-5A-R strobe plates. Pulls are all EST GE 270-SPO.

The Montana’s near there has a Mircom system, with Mircom BL-6B bells on EST 403-5A-R strobe plates. They are so rare! Pulls are Edwards 270-SPO.

Phoenix Grill has an EST system, with a GS 6’ bell on an EST 403-5A-R strobe plate, the only signal. Pull was a Notifier NFM-950B.

Well that’s all for now. I am going somewhere tonight, so I will tell you some more soon!

I’ve been there to both the observatory and to the restaurant on the top floor, and although the most recent time I was last there was in 2014, I recalled seeing some Wheelock Speaker Strobes there, too. I wasn’t really into alarms at the time so I didn’t pay too close attention to the devices though.

Danscott Studio has an EST system (i am not sure), with Edwards 439D-6AWC bells. Pulls are all Edwards 270-SPO.
