Fire Alarms in Buildings (2.0)

The Calgary Public Library has a Notifier NFS-320C system with System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic horn/strobes. Pulls were all Notifier NBG-12LX. It formerly had a Simplex 4010 system, the SpectrAlerts were the original and current signals. The pulls were all Simplex 4099-9001/2099-9754. The Notifier system was added in 2014.
Anyway, come tomorrow, I am going to a few places. I will tell you about the alarms.

I just went to CF Market Mall, and they had a pretty interesting system.

The mall has an EST 3 system with EST Integrity horns and horn/strobes. Most with strobes, but in the halls some don’t. These are the wall mount versions mounted on the ceiling and had ‘FIRE’ sideways! Some are on the walls of some stores. They are white in the halls, and red in the stores. Pulls in the mall are EST 270-GAO. (not a two stage setup tho) There are also white-painted flush-mount adaptahorns scattered around. The Safeway there has an Integrity by the doors, but the signals were System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic horn/strobes. The pulls there were Grinnell rebranded Notifier NFM-950B. There is an Edwards 10’ Single-Stroke Adaptabel with a light under it for the lottery thing. The Toys ‘R’ Us there has the 270-GAOs, but the alarms were EST 882-2B horns.

All strobes sync, and all horns are set to code-3.

The models of the horns and horn/strobes are 757-1A-T and 757-5A-T (15cd).

Sorry for 5 time posting, but i have another one.

I went to Nakiska Ski Resort, the lodge has an Edwards system? with Edwards 881D-AW horns. Pulls were all Edwards 274-111

I sort of figured you would eventually see Adaptahorns since they seem to be very big in Canada.

That’s funny; I remember when twoplyboy had various Canadian fire alarm field testing videos on YouTube, one of them showed a Simplex 4010 system with the classic SpectrAlerts! It was in a school, though. As I may have said, I find it quite odd to see System Sensor signals used on Simplex systems, compared to Notifier systems, where it looks a bit more “normal.” And at least they were able to easily keep the classic SpectrAlerts, due to Notifier and System Sensor both being owned by Honeywell.

I got a rather interesting system that isn’t too far from me.

A Embassy Suits Hotel near me has a Siemens system. Mostly there is UMMT’s and Siemens strobes, while in the lobby there is something interesting. In the lobby there is a Wheelock 7002T and a Gamewell M69. Other decent sized buildings I’ve seen are rather new systems.

It definitely seems quite odd to have System Sensor signals on a Simplex system, but this type of setup is surprisingly not uncommon in Canada. Even though TrueAlerts and Wheelock signals are the most common NAs I see on newer Simplex systems, a minority of these setups use SpectrAlerts.

There are other odd combinations of brands that appear to be common in Canada but not in the United States. It’s not rare, for instance, to see newer Siemens systems with Mircom/Amseco signals, despite Siemens also offering its usual line of rebranded Wheelock devices.

twoplyboy’s belltest video’s are not seen on youtube anymore. A guy scolded him

Well I just got back from running errands, and here are the systems.

Walmart Supercentre in Calgary has an EST QuickStart system, with EST Genesis Horn/Strobes (red, no FIRE lettering.) Pulls are all EST 270-SPO with Stopper II covers. I also find that the red Genesis horn/strobes with no fire lettering are VERY common in my area.

Sobeys Liquor Store has an EST system with the same EST Genesis horn/strobes, however, one is white, but no fire lettering as usual. Pulls are the same 270-SPO.

CO-OP (mentioned twice now) has a Notifier AFP-200 system, with System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic horn/strobes. Pulls were all Notifier NFM-950B.

New Bern Convention Center–New Bern, NC

Late 1990’s-Early 2000’s Notifier Addressable Panel (not visible)—Probably an AFP-Series

Notifier NBG-101L addressable pulls
System Sensor-made Notifier addressable smokes (older models…no info to be found through Notifier)
Unkown Beam Detectors monitored by Notifier monitor modules…I can’t even find pictures, let alone data sheets

Gentex Commander1 HS24 horn/strobes throughout
Gentex Commander1 ST24 remote strobes throughout

Although this is a boring system to many, I found it interesting as there aren’t any Notifier systems of that vintage that I know of in my area and there aren’t any Notifier installations period in my area that use Gentex signals (it’s either Wheelock AS/NS/ZNS or SpectrAlert Classic/Advance signals).

Couple systems:

DoubleTree (Bedford, Massachusetts)
Pulls-Autocall 4050s
Smokes - Room had Gentex photoelectric smoke detectors. Halls had TrueAlerts by the elevators.
Panel - Unknown
NAs: Most of the building had these Federal Signal devices. I’m assuming 950B speakers, but they could be horns.

The lobby area has them behind Space Age light plates, so I’m assuming the entire bulding had them at one point, hence the odd shape of the plate. Most of the building had Simplex rectangular remote strobes.

Home2Suites (Middletown, New York)
Very standard system here for a new building:
Pulls: Notifier BG-12s
Smokes: Unidentified low-profile Notifier smokes, on sounder bases in rooms
Panel: Unknown. Notifier annunciator at main entrance.
NAs: Everyone’s favorite: SpectrAlert Advances. Horn/strobes in the halls, remote strobes in rooms. No idea what they’re set to, because the evacuation map on the door says the alarm “sounds like a bell”. I know they’re not low-frequency (NY doesn’t require it, anyway).

I don’t think I have ever seen a horn that looks like that. I’m pretty sure its a speaker.

I am staying at the Panorama Springs Hotel in Panorama BC, and here is the system.

It has an addressable EST system (EST2, EST3) with General Signal MB10-24 bells for the most part. By the end of the 5th floor, there is a General Signal bell installed upside down. In the basement, where you go to the pools, one of the General Signal bells broke down and was replaced with an Edwards MB10-24 bell. In every room, there is a white General Signal silenceable mini-horn. The smokes are all EST SIGA-PS. The pulls are all Edwards 270-SPO. The pull stations were mounted high, 5 ft! It is probably they did that so that kids don’t pull it.

The check in building is small, so there’s no alarm system, just your regular household smoke alarms.

I just visited the General Store there (which has a Thunderbird Pizza) and it has a very interesting system. It has a Mircom FX-2000 system with red Mircom FHS-340 horns. The pulls however are Edwards classic pulls.

The T-Bar And Grill has an Edwards system with an Edwards 439D-10AWC bell. There were two pull stations, both were Edwards 274-111.

a building that has a cafe, has a Notifier system, with Notifier KMS-10-24VDC bells. There is also an Edwards 439D-10AWC by the stairway. Pulls were all Notifier NFM-950B.

The Telus World of Science (closed since 2011) had a Notifier or an EST system, with Notifier KMS-10-24VDC bells on Wheelock RSSP-24MCW strobe plates. The entrance however, had Edwards 439D-6AWC bells on EST 403-5A-R strobe plates! The upstairs are had lone Edwards 439D-6AWC bells. Pulls were Notifier NFM-950B’s near the Notifier bell/strobes, and Edwards 270-SPO’s near the Edwards bells. Pretty interesting system!

Onto the Telus Spark Science Center has a Siemens FireFinder XLS system with Siemens rebranded bilingual Wheelock MT-24MCW-FW horn/strobes. There is one with only English lettering in the cafeteria. Pulls were all bilingual Siemens MS-51.

I was mistaken! There are no wall mounted SpectrAlerts! It had a Mircom FX-2000 system, with red ceiling mount System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes. The alarms on the walls are red Potter/Amseco/Mircom Select A Horn/strobes, model FHS-340! there is one outside too! Pulls are all Mircom MS-401.

I just went to the Sobeys in Country Hills, and they just had a system upgrade. They now have a Mircom system, with red wall mount System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance Horn/Strobes. These are in the place of the Genesis horn/strobes. In the bakery, the are installed on the wall, but in the rest of the store, they were installed on the ceilings while they were wall mount and had ‘FIRE’ sideways! Pulls are now all Mircom MS-501.

SmashBurger has an EST system, with EST Genesis horn/strobes. (white, no FIRE lettering) Pulls are all EST GE SIGA-270.

The Sobeys Liquor Store (mentioned twice now) has an EST system too, with EST Genesis horn/strobes (red, no FIRE lettering). The Genesis by the wine is white, but has no FIRE lettering as usual. Pulls are all EST SIGA-270 (the same as my school)

The Cineplex Odeon in Crowfoot has a Notifier AFP-400 system, with System Sensor MA/SS horn/strobes. These are mounted on the walls in the lobby and theatres. In the hall, they are mounted on the ceiling. Pulls are all Notifier NFM-950B.

The place my new medicine prescriber works at in Stoughton MA has a rather interesting fire alarm system. The alarm signals there are mostly Wheelock 7002T horn/strobes! I don’t see them very much anymore, so this was neat. At one entrance there was a “classic” System Sensor SpectrAlert, probably replacing a 7002T that failed. However, all the pull stations I saw were what appeared to be Fire-Lite BG-12LXs that were rebranded by Easton Electronics (they had their label placed over the Fire-Lite logo on each pull station), and the smoke detectors were SD-355s on the newer conical base. This suggests the 7002Ts were probably originally installed with BG-10s or something else, and then they upgraded the fire alarm system but kept the old alarms for grandfather clauses.
