Fire Alarms in Buildings (2.0)
I made a whole list of fire alarms I saw in Chicago a few pages ago on this thread, when I went there about two months ago. Yes, there were a LOT of Advance speakers & speaker strobes (a lot of the smaller stores had remote Advance speakers) but I recall seeing A LOT more Wheelock E-50s than 70s. Surprisingly, I never saw any Gentex models up there. I DID see a Faraday H/S, it was a -9838 horn with a CP vertical strobe, but I don't know what the model number for that was. It was mounted on the ceiling.
Actually, it’s funny that you mention that. Much of Navy Pier is currently under renovation (like, major renovation), and I think a new fire alarm system is part of the plan. I suspect even in these past two months a lot more Advances were installed, which would explain why I saw quite a lot of them. Also, on a side note, I’m pretty sure the Faraday alarms were speaker/strobes, since they had the little rectangular indents going up the entirety of both sides of the alarm, not just in each of the corners like what a -9838 horn would have.

You mean those alarms in the large building? I recall them looking like that, though they could’ve also been electronic horn/strobes, since that same model is used for both of those.

Yes, it was the main building. It seems strange that the Faraday devices would have been horn/strobes when almost everything else was a speaker/strobe, but it wouldn’t be the craziest thing I’ve ever seen.

So I had to go to my Dog’s animal clinic to get him some medicine. The alarms might either be SpectrAlert Advance horn/strobes or chime/strobes, because there were three in the lobby, to mention is VERY small. Pulls are Silent Knight branded duel BG-12s, so it’s probably a small SK system. Detectors are SS 2151s.

I also ran through Wendy’s for my lunch meal. All I know, since I ran through the drive-thru is that the alarms are Wheelock ASes and the smoke detectors are old System Sensor 2451s. There were also BG-12s which limits the system possibilities to any

Lol same at west edmonton mall. They have a simplex 4100 or so, with possibly every brand of bells and bell/strobes!

Mad Rose Pub has a Notifier system, with System Sensor SpectrAlert Advanced P2R/P4R horn/strobes. Pulls are all Notifier NBG-12LX.

CO-OP in Crowfoot has a Notifier NFS-320C system, with mostly System Sensor SpectrAlert Advanced PC2W horn/strobes, they blend into the ceiling well. A few walls have System Sensor P2R horn/strobes on them. Outside, there is a System Sensor P2RK horn/strobe. Pulls are all Notifier NBG-12LX.

CO-OP Liquor has some sort of Notifier system, with one System Sensor SpectrAlert Advanced HW horn with tape on the grill. There appears to be no pull stations, but System Sensor 1412E smoke detectors.

Smashburger near Royal Oak has an EST system of some sort, with two EST G1-HDVM horn/strobes. Pulls are both EST GE SIGA-270.

The Home Depot in Tuscany has a Notifier ONYX-series system, with System Sensor SpectrAlert P1224MC horn/strobes on the ceiling. Pulls are all Notifier NBG-12LX.

CF Market Mall has an EST3 system (saw the annunciator), with EST 757-5A-TW (white) horn/strobes and 757-1A-TW (white) horns in the hallways, mounted on the ceiling, with the FIRE lettering vertically. In the stores, there are EST 757-5A-T (red) horn/strobes mounted either on the ceiling or the wall. The Toys ‘R’ Us in there has Edwards 882-2B horns instead of Integrity horn/strobes, possibly from the 1988 renovation. The Safeway in there has an Integrity horn/strobe in the passage to it, but the main horn/strobes in there are System Sensor SpectrAlert P1224MC, There are also white-painted Edwards flush-mounted Adaptahorns everywhere, not sure if its part of it or not. Pulls are Edwards 270-GAO (not two-stage setup tho) in the main mall, and Grinnell-rebranded Notifier MPS-950B in the Safeway. The strobes are synchronized, but not the horns, and they do code-3

Goodwill in Royal Oak has a Mircom FX-2000 system, with Mircom FHS-340R horn/strobes in some parts, but mostly System Sensor P2R horn/strobes set to 75cd each. Outside there is a Mircom FHS-340R-WP horn/strobe. Pulls are all Mircom MS-401.

Walmart in Royal Oak has an EST QuickStart system, with EST G1R-HDVM horn/strobes. Pulls are all EST GE SIGA-270, with Stopper II covers.

Pretty much all the stores in Deer Park seem to have tied in Simplex Systems, with most likely Simplex TrueAlarm smoke detectors and 4099-series pull stations. Only one of the stores, the Apple Store had a White Simplex TrueAlert horn/strobe. The remainder of the plaza seemed to either have Wall or Ceiling red Simplex TrueAlert horn/strobes.

I only saw these from the car window, as me and my family were going to see Jumanji (very good movie, would recommend) at the Century Theatre in Deer Park. There was obviously a Simplex 4100U system, with Simplex TrueAlert wall mounted speaker/strobes and strobes. The small theatre room we went into to see the movie had a TrueAlert strobe by the entrance door, a speaker/strobe on the back near the projector, and oddly a speaker & strobe to the right of the screen. I guess it wasn’t loud enough so they added the speaker but I have no clue… Detectors are TrueAlarms and pulls are 4099-9001s.

Nakiska Lodge (not Mid-Mountain Lodge) in Kananaskis has an Edwards Custom 6500 system, with Edwards 881D-AW flush-mount horns. Pulls are all Edwards 274-111, and the smokes (there is lots of them) are all Edwards “doorknob” smokes, not sure of the model #.

Turns out these detectors were actually Apollo Series 90s.

One Ford Place (Detroit)

Annunciators/panels:

Older FCI zone annunciator, model unknown

Detectors:

Gentex ionization detectors above elevators

Pull stations:

Johnson Controls-branded BG-12 models

Notification appliances:

The whole building consists of tan-colored Atlas Soundolier speakers mounted on flush plates! I don’t have a precise model number, but it is not the VT-157 series of devices.
At least one 10" sprinkler(?) bell near one entrance outside, either Wheelock or a rebrand

I’m thinking I should move to Michigan because they seem to have some really unique systems there.

The St. Cloud Regional Airport has a Simplex 4010 system dating to around 2010 with TrueAlert horn/strobes and 4099 pull stations. Nothing too interesting there.

The “Palaestra” building on the campus of St. John’s University in Collegeville, MN, has a pretty unique system. The original 1970s wing still has (as of a few years ago) some Simplex 40XX-looking devices, but silver (Standard or Notifier??). In the field house and some other areas, added in the late 90s, the system consists of a Notifier voice-evac system with Wheelock E-70 speaker/strobes. I’m pretty sure both systems are tied together, which must make for some interesting fire drills.

If they are silver horns, then I think they might be 4040s or 4050s. I don’t think 4051s came in silver and 4041s are very rare.

I think he might be referring to the color of the horn plate, so it might be a 4041

I’m referring to the color of the flush plate. I recall them possibly saying Notifier on the front, but I may just be going crazy.

It its the flush plate then it still could be a 4041. There was one collector on YouTube that had a 4041 that was gray.

Planet Organic in Royal Oak has a Notifier NFS-320C system, with System Sensor P2R/P4R horn/strobes. Pulls are all Notifier NBG-12LX.

The YMCA in Rocky Ridge that just opened on Wednesday has a Simplex 4100ES voice-evac system, with Simplex TrueAlert 4906-9154 speaker/strobes in some areas. Some areas have Simplex 4902-9716 speakers, where more sound coverage is needed, and sometimes seen with the 4906-9154’s. The rest of the building has Simplex 4906-9151 speaker/strobes, some 9716 speakers are seen beside them. Outside there is a Simplex 4906-9105 weatherproof TrueAlert strobe, under an overhang by an entrance, the panel is at that entrance. Pulls are all Simplex 4099-9004CA

City Hall has an EST system, with EST 964-3A-4RW speaker/strobes. Pulls are all EST GE SIGA-270

Victoria Park/Stampede station has an EST or Edwards system, with Edwards 439D-10AWC bells. Pulls are Edwards 270-SPO.

BMO Centre has an EST3 or something, with Edwards MB10-24 bells on EST 403-5A-R strobe plates. Pulls are all EST SIGA-270P.

Scotiabank Saddledome has a voice-evac system, with Atlas Sound VT-152UCR speakers in some places, others have standard 8’’ ceiling speakers, some painted red. In the main arena, there is Atlas Sound GA-15T horn speakers. Pulls are older Edwards 270-SPO, but I think at one entrance there’s a Fire Lite BG-12

The Church of Eleven22 of Arlington in Jacksonville, FL has a Notifier voice evacuation system with white System Sensor L-Series speaker/strobes. This is the first time I’ve ever seen L-Series alarms in person before. There are also L-Series remote strobes in the restrooms and some small office rooms. The auditorium has 8 speaker/strobes inside. (I can only imagine how loud it gets in there during fire alarms.) All speaker/strobes are 75 cd, and all remote strobes are 15 cd. The pull stations are Notifier NBG-12LXs. At the main entrance, there is a Notifier annunciatior and a Notifier NFC-RM remote microphone that probably ties into the voice evac system. No smoke dectectors were seen anywhere.
