Gentex Commander 3 with Tape over the Horn

There is a Commander 3 at School in one of the Trailers. The last time I saw this one it didn’t have Tape over it. But when I saw it today I noticed someone taped Red Tape over it. Why would someone do this?

Before.

Today.

No idea, other than to make it quieter for whatever reason, though whether that’s against code I have no idea (probably is I’d imagine given they’re obviously meant to have their horns unobstructed when made & installed).

Two possible reasons:

  1. The trailer could also be used by little kids, and teachers love to put tape over horns to not freak little kids out
    or
  2. Someone just thought the horn was too loud for the trailer.

I don’t know how big the trailer is, but if it’s a small one that could be quite loud. Either way it is a code violation and not safe.

It’s a High School Classroom.

It’s likely it was too loud and they didn’t know how to change the Volume. Other than that I’m not very happy they covered it. Although it will be enjoyable during Fire Drills.

Speaking of which you wouldn’t believe how quiet the Commander series is (2-4 anyway) when set on low volume: much quieter than most other appliances on the same setting! (heck you really have to set it on high volume for it to really do anything in the way of audibility)

That’s interesting. I wonder why Gentex did that?

No idea to be honest, unless they wanted “low volume” to truly meanlow volume”.

At the high school I went to, the bathrooms all had Commander 3 horn/strobes in strobe-only enclosures.

But yeah, that horn should definitely be uncovered (and always set to high volume).

What? Who could’ve made that mistake with those covers? (provided it was an actual mistake & not an intentional attempt at quieting the horns, which considering it was a bathroom might be a good idea given all the echo)

Mhm.
