Google is Discontinuing Nest Protect

Launched first in 2013, the Nest Protect has had two generations (with the second debuting in 2015). Google acquired Nest in 2014, but has since stepped away from most of the Nest products, with the exception of their thermostat. Instead, focusing more on Google Home as a platform with partners.

Today, Google announced they’re officially killing off Nest Protect in favor of partnering with Fist Alert to make a Google Home compatible smoke/CO alarm, as well as discontinuing the Nest lock to partner with Yale going forward.

Interesting. Hopefully the Google home compatible first alert smoke alarm is less prone to false alarms than the nest protect, as I heard it was quite problematic in that regard.

About dang time if you ask me: dang thing was always nothing more than a buggy piece of junk & a gimmicky so-called “smart device”. Sorta glad to hear that they went with First Alert for its replacement given First Alert’s experience in the smoke detector business (& the fact that they arguably make the best detectors nowdays).

i’m happy they’re killing it off because nest thermostats suck.

I’m personally really hoping that the first alert will be capable of matter / thread so it works with Google, Alexa, Apple Home, etc… I have all my smart home stuff in Home Assistant now

From what I can see it’s compatible with the google home and first alert app. The onelink safe and sound was definitely a more advanced smart smoke and co alarm. I really wished ring went with first alert rather than Kidde for there smart smoke alarms. First alert has been one of the best smoke alarm manufacturers. It’s really weird to see google going to what was the compilation for there new alarms.
