Help with a SK 5700 setup

Good morning. I am new to the group so first a little background. I am an instructor at a technical college, I am a licensed electrical contractor, and have done some fire alarm wiring. However, I am new to the setup and programming part. I have purchased a Silent Knight 5700 panel and devices to use as a wiring lab in my classes. My problem is that I would love for the students to be able to activate and test the system once they have wired it. For that to happen I need to make sure that I have the unit wired correctly and programmed correctly. Is there anyone here that would offer to provide some one-on-one assistance by answering some basic questions concerning my system?

Hi, welcome to the forums!

Before I answer your question I do have one quick question, as you have said this would be to show students how to wire the panel up, I’m assuming this would be for testing only and will not be used as a actual life safety system?

As for you question, It would depend on what those questions are. If they are simple technical questions I may be able to answer them. However, if they are more in depth questions, I’m sure a Fire Alarm Technician on this forum will be happy to answer them for you better than I can.

Thank you for your welcome. To answer your question, yes, the alarm system is solely for demonstration/testing purposes in a lab setting. The building has integral fire alarm and sprinkler protection and this system would not be attached in any way to the building system.
My problems so far are probably simple and due to my lack of knowledge. I have wired a system of 10 SD smoke detectors and 1 pull station (all addressable) and two notification devices, one strobe and one horn/strobe. I have been not been able to get the system to go into alarm. I also show three troubles on the system, 2 are phone troubles since I’m not connected to a telephone line and the other is a battery due to not having battery backup installed.
I am also unsure of the need for the EOL, do I need it for the notification devices or the signalling devices; either, both, neither?

Thank you in advance for any assistance you may be able to render.

To answer your question concerning the Notification Appliance Circuits (signal circuits), you will need a 4.7k-ohm resistor on each of them in order to clear the trouble, if the system is to be wired in Class B.
You do not need an end-of-line resistor on the Signaling Line Circuit (addressable loop) because the devices on the loop are polled rather than just being checked for resistance.

Best of luck to you and your demo system, and if you need any further help, feel free to ask us!

You can clear the phone line trouble by fooling the panel into thinking it sees an active phone line. Run some wire from the 24vdc output to the tip and ring terminals for both phone lines in parallel. As long as you have no telephone numbers programmed into the panel, it should never attempt to dial out.
