This is an interesting combination of an older Wheelock Speaker/Strobe and an older System Sensor Remote Strobe in a restroom at my college (there are multiple of these set-ups throughout campus). What are your thoughts and theories on why they chose to install these two devices right next to one another?
I have absolutely no idea why they would do something like that. It makes zero sense. Maybe only thought is that maybe there was, at one point, a device without a strobe in the spot with the speaker/strobe and they decided to replace it with a device with a strobe for whatever reason. Very weird.
Mass notification. The speaker is used for both. The blank strobe and speaker are activated for mass notification events and the fire strobe and speaker are activated for fire events.
Both of them have the “FIRE” lettering on their strobes, so that can’t be it. I did think about, however, that when it came time for a system replacement, they can put just that in place of the two devices!
Although you can barely see it, the strobe on the speaker says “Fire” on the side, and that’s the other interesting part, it is not a proper installation for the wall since it was meant to be ceiling-mounted.
Only other thing I can figure out is since the speaker/strobe is a ceiling-mount device, maybe they just couldn’t mount it on the ceiling and only wired up the speaker, and the remote-strobe would cover the visual aspect of the restroom, with the “FIRE” lettering being visible from all angles. The same type of speaker/strobe is placed throughout the same building just fine on the ceiling, but that’s because they are on drop-ceilings, and this restroom just has a hard ceiling, which is probably why the mounting on the ceiling didn’t work out!
A very odd setup indeed. As others have said it just seems redundant to have two visual signals in the same room as each other like that (side-by-side no less).
