The John Smith K-12 school was originally built in 1957 as a high school. The original system had an Autocall 4-4-4-4 panel installed in the main electrical room, with an alarm indicator in the main office. The notification appliances were grey Simplex 4040 horns, the ones in the hallways had dual projectors while all the other ones had single projectors. Pull stations were Standard 200711s installed at each exit. Simplex bell type heat detectors were scattered throughout the building.
In 1966, one of the 4040s died, so it was replaced by a 4050.
In 1969, 2 200711s broke down and were replaced by Edwards 270-SPOs.
In 1974, 2 more 4040s broke down. They were replaced by Edwards Adaptahorns.
In 1982, the school district wanted to be more efficient with their buildings. That summer, they decided to add a massive expansion and renovate the original building. The new expansion would be a middle school building with two 2-story classroom wings, 20 classrooms each, for a total of 40 new classrooms. A new larger gym and new locker rooms were added by the original ones as well. On top of that, there would now be a large commons area at the entrance and an expanded front office. As a result, a new fire alarm system was necessary.
A new Simplex 2001 panel with 32 zones was installed. The Autocall panel and all of the horns, pulls, and heats were removed. New Simplex 4051s on 4050-80 light plates were installed throughout the school. The horns and lights were coded to march time. Simplex 4251-30s were installed at each exit and in other areas in the school. Simplex whiffle ball detectors were installed in halls and classrooms. Heat detectors were installed in science rooms and kitchens.
In 1990, 7 4051s went bad, and were replaced with 2901-9838 horns
In 1994, 3 4251-30s were found to be defective and were replaced with 2099-9756s
In 1996 10 whiffle ball detectors went bad, and were replaced with 2098-9201 detectors. On top of that, 11 4050-80 plates burnt out, and they as well as their horns were replaced with 4903-9219s
In 1997, A 2901-9838 broke and had a 4903-9236 slapped onto the light plate
By 2000, 8 4251-30s were missing the break glass hammers. They were replaced with 2099-9754s
In 2001, 3 4051s broke down. They were replaced by Simplex 4903-9425 Truealerts
In 2010 another expansion was added to the school. An elementary school wing was added with an additional 40 classrooms. The district decided to again replace the system. This time they installed an addressable Simplex 4100U. A 4603-9101 annunciator was installed at the front entrance. Simplex 4099-9003 pull stations were installed near every exit and 4098-9714 detectors were installed in almost every room. Simplex 4906-9127 Truealert horn strobes were installed in the halls, classrooms and large rooms. Small rooms and bathrooms had 4906-9101 Truealert strobes installed.
The 2001, along with all of the old devices were taken out. The administration even allowed a fire alarm collector attending the school at the time was allowed to save the 2001 and most of the devices.
The 4100U system remains to this day.
