Make Up a System (2.0)

Castle North Middle School is set up with a system like this:
In most of the school, the alarms are actually Edwards 894-2B horn/strobes which are basically Adaptahorns in a 892 body

The auxiliary gym has Siemens U-HNH horn/strobes which also extends to the locker rooms

The health lab has a Space Age Electronics VA4 horn/strobe

The band room has a Faraday 5515 horn/strobe which is a Simplex 9833 but with a strobe like the Wheelock 7002T

The media center has an Edwards Integrity which is set to a code-3 horn

The Family and Consumer Science Kitchen has an Edwards Genesis set to code-3

Alfie Thorpe High School is a very large, functioning school, housing over 3000 students. It was built in 1985, and starting alarms consisted of Wheelock 7001Ts, but there was only one in every short hallway, and two in longer hallways. The Gymnasium had one 7001T at the doorway. There was a very old Fire-Lite system in, so all of the pull stations were of course Fire-Lite BG-10s. None of the classrooms, even the large art classrooms, had any form of alarm.

Small change in 1986, but two of the 7001Ts got replaced with 7002Ts, the one in the Gym and one in the 300-360 classroom hallway.

Unnoticeable change in 1989, another 7001T located in the 200-260 hallway was replaced with a Wheelock EH remote horn.

Huge change in 1994, all the alarms were replaced with non-ADA Wheelock MT horn-strobes on march time, except the 7002T in the gym and the EH. Pulls are still BG-10. Larger classrooms were given the horn-strobes, while smaller classrooms, bathrooms, offices, and stairwells were given Wheelock WH3Ts. There was a 34T mounted outside the school door.

Small change in 1998, the 7002T in the gym was busted by a basketball and replaced with three Wheelock NSes in code 3. They had bars protecting them. They also added 3 BG-12s underneath the alarms.

Large change in 2005, the school introduced a final built weight-room and a pool. They have also began construction on another building. The weight-room has two NS horn-strobes and two RSS strobes, and has a BG-12. The pool got four AS weatherproof horn-strobes and two RSS strobes. There were two BG-12s on each doorway. They also replaced most of the WH3Ts with RSS strobes, stairwells, most bathrooms, and some classrooms still have them.

Big change in 2008, they replaced the remaining WH3Ts with SpectrAlert Advance SR strobes, and ripped out all the MTs (and EH) in the hallways and replaced them with P2R horn strobes. Everything else remains, and the stairwells still have WH3T strobes.

Finally, in 2010, the school unleashed the new building. It was massive and had voice-evac. There was a Simplex 4100U system, with ceiling mounted TrueAlert speaker strobes all over. Bathrooms had TrueAlert white strobes and the gym and commons had wall-mounted TrueAlert white speaker strobes. Pulls are all simplex 4099-9001 with stopper II covers, and smokes are TrueAlarms.

In 2017, the older building switched to Simplex Evac and got a 4010ES system. There are White TrueAlert ES wall and ceiling speaker strobes, and it has ES strobes in the bathrooms and stairwells. Pulls are all 4099-9004, and smokes are all Simplex TrueAlarm.

Berney Elementary School has a system that is a mix of old Simplex horns and newer Simplex horns and is quite unique in that way so the setup of the system is like this.
Hallways and all other areas in the main building not applicable have Simplex 4903-9219 horn/strobes in continuous.

The Learning Assistance Program Classroom which is also the Resource Room and the Psychologist’s Room has a Simplex 4903-9236 in continuous.

The Instructional Specialist Room and the Music Room has a Simplex 2901-9806 horn behind a 4903 strobe plate set to continuous.

The Library and the dual OT/PT and Birth to 3 Speech Building has a Simplex 4051 horn behind a 4050-80 light plate. The horn is in continuous and the light plate is in march time.

The Gymnasium Building has Simplex 2901-9833s horn behind 2903 strobe plate set to continuous.

The exterior of the dual OT/PT and Birth to 3 Speech Building has a Simplex TrueAlert.

Washington Middle School was built in 1986 and had a very old Notifier system. The starting alarms consisted of System Sensor MASS24LO (with the times new roman font, dunno the model number but I’ve seen it in a McDonalds) in the hallways, gym, and commons, while System Sensor PA400Rs with PS24LO strobes attached are located in classrooms and bathrooms. All the pulls were Notifier BG-1s, but were very uncommon. Smoke detectors were system sensor 2412Bs, and were also uncommon.

1989: A couple of the BG-1s broke down and were replaced by BG-6s. They also scattered more of the BG-6s around the building.

1991-1997: As time progressed, more and more of the BG-1s broke down during drills that they were all replaced by 10s in 1991-96 and a 12 in 1997.

1996- half of the school got renovated due to leaks and ideas so the alarms on those specific areas were replaced by System Sensor PS2475ADAs (ADA MASS/SpectrAlert? mini horns) in classrooms and the gym, SS2475ADAs (MASS remote strobes) in bathroooms and offices, and normal MASS241575ADAs (MASS horn/strobes) everywhere else. Pulls were Notifier BG-12.

1997- two hallways in the unrenovated area were abandoned, so their fire alarms remain the same.

2005- Because of codes, all the non-ADA alarms were replaced with Ceiling mounted SpectrAlert Classic horn strobes, with remote strobes in the bathrooms. Besides, the entirety of the unrenovated half was renovated. All pulls in the building are BG-12.

2006- The school got a new Notifier NFS-320 system, and the non-ADA MASSses and PAs in the abandoned halls were disconnected. A diagonal hallway with stairs that connected from one end of the school to the other was given a mix between P4R and SR Advance NAs.

2013: Two Advance P2RHKs were mounted in the exterior of the school. All the MASSes were also replaced by SpectraLert Advanced P2Rs. The PSs and MASS strobes remain. The gym has ExitPoint speakers now.

2016 (NO ALARM REPLACEMENT): The school announced on it’s site that they are building onto and completely modernizing everything. The school will be 1.5 times bigger than before.

2017: Everything changed. All of the original alarms are completely replaced and will instead be ceiling mounted System Sensor L-series speaker strobes. The panel is also new and is a Notifier I-2000 system. Pulls are BG-12XL and smoke detectors are Notifier NI-100s. The ExitPoint speakers in the gym still exist. (The abandoned hallways are still there and the old alarms there have not changed though. A couple are ripped out too.)

Horace Mann Middle School on the other hand however is a mostly Gentex school with Gentex alarms and only two other brands of horns are in the school but they are outnumbered by how many Gentex alarms they are and those two just got put in on their route to being installed somewhere.
All areas of the school not stated and the hallways have Gentex GMS horn/strobes set to continuous tone

The rather large orchestra room in the school however has a Gentex SHG horn/strobe set to continuous tone

In the Family Consumer Sciences kitchen, the alarm in their is a Space Age Electronics VA4 horn/strobe on continuous tone

The World Cultures classroom has an Edwards 792 horn/strobe that goes off in continuous

The entrance at one point was renovated and the horns there were replaced with Gentex GOS horn/strobes in 2400 Hz continuous

Finally, the technology classroom as well as the pool room (which has 6 of them) has Gentex GX-90 horn/strobes also set to continuous

Thorndyke Junior/Senior High School, built in 1986, originally had a Simplex 2001 fire alarm system. The main signals are Simplex 2901-9806 Horns on 2903 Strobe Plates, with the gym having flush mount Simplex 2901-9806 Horns next to red, unmarked, 2904 strobes. Most of the classrooms have red 2904 strobes, but the larger rooms, the art workshops, band room and choir room have Simplex 2901-9806 horns on 2903 strobe plates. The pulls are Simplex 4521-20s, and there are Simplex Whiffle ball smokes installed throughout campus. Signal coding is 90 BPM march time. The school bell is a tone over the intercom, which is a Rauland Telecenter III. The master clock system is a Simplex 6400, which is tied into the intercom system.

In 1990, a 2901-9806 horn in the Junior High school cafeteria died and was replaced with a Wheelock 34T.

In 1992, a Simplex 4521-20 in the Junior High wing broke and was replaced with a Simplex 4099. Also during an inspection a Simplex Whiffle Ball smoke was replaced with a System Sensor 2400.

In 1995, two 2901-9806 Horns broke in the senior high wing. They were replaced with Gentex GMS horn/strobes.

In 1996, a Simplex TrueAlarm replaced a whiffle ball smoke in the auditorium. Also a 2901-9806 horn in the gym was smashed and replaced with a Amesco Motor Horn.

In 1997, a new addition was built. A Simplex 4100 was tied into the Simplex 2001. The signals are Simplex 4903-9217 Horn/Strobes, with 4904 strobes in the restrooms. The pulls are Simplex 4099s and there are TrueAlarms installed throughout. Signal coding in the new wing is code-3.

In 1999, a 2904 in a Math Classroom broke, and was replaced with a Wheelock NS Horn/Strobe.

In 2002, two 4521-20s broke and were replaced with Simplex 2099s. Also a TrueAlarm replaced a whiffleball smoke.

In 2004, the library was renovated. The signals there were replaced with Simplex TrueAlert Horn/Strobes, and the pulls were replaced with 2099s. Everything else remained the same.

In 2006, the fire alarm system in the main wing was replaced. The Simplex 2001 was removed, and replaced with a Simplex 4100U. The main signals are now Simplex TrueAlert Horn/Strobes, with Simplex TrueAlert Strobes providing additional coverage where needed. Both cafeterias, the auditorium, and the gym gained Simplex TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes. Faraday U-HN-MCS Horn/strobes were installed outside. The new pull stations are Simplex 2099s, with TrueAlarms replacing the whiffleball smokes. Signal coding is Code-3, with the speaker/strobes playing a slow-whoop tone and a voice evacuation message. The 1997 addition’s system stayed the same. The intercom system was also replaced with a Bogen Multicom 2000, which contained an internal master clock system.

In 2007, two 4903-9217s were replaced with Wheelock ZNS horn/strobes.

The system stays the same to this day.

Bowie Middle School has a completely Edwards system and the alarms in the school are these.
The main building has Edwards 881D horns on Edwards 891D light plates set to continuous. They mounted horizontally with the light pointing left with FIRE lettering and they all sound as healthy as they did the day they were put in because the maintenance pays close attention to the system and keeps them well-functioning.

Both the library and the secondary art room have Edwards 895B-001 horn/strobes also on a continuous tone. 895Bs are just Adaptahorns with an 892-2B body so they sound the same but can have different pitches.

The keyboarding classroom, home economics kitchen and sewing workroom all have Edwards 792s horn/strobes which also sound in continuous. 792s are pretty much 892-2B horns in a smaller and different perforated Integrity body.

The fine arts building and the orchestra classroom in the main building have Edwards 892-2B horn/strobes which are also continuous. Most of them have different pitches especially the 892-2Bs in the classrooms as opposed to the hallways of the fine arts building.

The main art room has an Edwards Integrity set to code-3 tone. Code-3 is the default tone and they didn’t bother changing it as they needed a quick replacement for the 881D+891D combo that died.

Finally each of the five portable rooms out on the campus have Edwards Genesis set to code-3. This is because there is a separate panel for the five portable rooms that is set to code-3.

Another one from Disney’s Recess:
98th Street Elementary School, built in 1927, originally had a pull-rod fire alarm system, which was automated in 1955 with an IBM 4205-2 Panel. The signals were mostly IBM 4030-2 Horns installed in the halls, band room, and library, with 4030-1 horns in the gym, auditorium, and cafeteria. Pulls are IBM 4250-1 break glass stations. Chemtronics heat sensors are installed throughout. Signal coding is 4-4. School bells are mostly Edwards Single Stroke Chimes in the hallways, along with 10 inch Adaptables outside. Classrooms have Dixie Buzzers. The master clock panel is Edwards.

In 1973, an IBM 4030-2 in the basement broke, and was replaced with a Simplex 4050 Horn. Also an Edwards chime was replaced with a Simplex Single Stroke Chime.

In 1976, a Simplex 4521-20 replaced an IBM 4250-1 in the Cafeteria.

In 1979, a 4030-2 in the library was replaced with a Wheelock 7004T.

In 1982, two Chemtronics heat sensors failed and were replaced with ESL smoke detectors.

In 1989, the school was renovated, and the fire alarm, clock/bell and intercom systems were replaced. The old IBM fire alarm system, including the pull rods, was removed. The new system is a Simplex 4100. Signals are FOS 6120+5511 Horn/Strobes installed throughout the school, including in the classrooms. Restrooms and areas needing strobe coverage gained FOS remote strobes. The auditorium got Simplex LifeAlarm Speakers on 4904 Strobe plates, and the gym got ceiling mount Simplex Bullseye Speakers with 4904 strobes on the walls. Outside they installed Simplex 2901-9846 Horns on 4903 Strobe Plates. Pull stations are Simplex 4521-20s and there are Simplex Wiffleball Smokes installed throughout. Signal coding is continuous with the speaker/strobes playing a slow whoop tone and a voice message. The school bell is now a tone over the intercom, the PA System and Master clock panel is a Rauland Telecenter.

In 1995, an FOS 6120+5511 in the second grade hallway was replaced with a Simplex 4903-9217 Horn/Strobe. Also two Wiffleballs were replaced with older TrueAlarms.

In 1997, a Simplex 4521-20 broke and was replaced with a Simplex 4099.

In 2002, two FOS 6120+5511s broke, and were replaced with Wheelock NS Horn/Strobes (set to code 3).

In 2004, a Simplex Bullseye Speaker in the gym broke and was replaced with a Wheelock E90 remote speaker. Also a 2901-9846 horn died and was replaced with a Wheelock ASWP Horn/Strobe.

In 2006, a LifeAlarm Speaker+4904 Strobe Plate was found inoperative and was replaced with a TrueAlert Speaker/Strobe.

In 2009, the Kindergarten and First Grade wings were remodeled. The signals in that wing were replaced with Simplex 4906-9127 horn/strobes with 4904 strobes in the restrooms, pull stations with Simplex 2099s and newer TrueAlarm Smokes replacing the existing smokes. Everything else stayed the same.

In 2011, two 4904 strobes in the gym died and were replaced with Wheelock RSS strobes.

In 2013, an FOS Horn/Strobe was replaced with a Simplex 4906-9217 Horn/Strobe.

In 2015, two Simplex 4521-20s were replaced with Simplex 2099s.

Another one:
Tomahawk Regional Hospital, built in 1985, originally had a Simplex 2120 fire alarm system. Signals were mostly Simplex 2902-9234 Chimes on 2903 Strobe Plates, with restrooms and breakrooms having 2904 strobes. Pulls were mostly Simplex 4521-30s and there were Simplex Wiffleball Smokes throughout the building. Signal coding is “zone” coding.

In 1992, 2 chimes broke and were replaced with Simplex 6 Inch Single Stroke Bells.

In 1995, a new 3 story orthopedic wing was constructed. A Simplex 4020 panel was installed which was tied into the existing Simplex 2120. The signals in the new wing are ceiling mounted Wheelock CH90 Chimes with wall-mounted 4904 strobes. Pull stations are Simplex 4099s with TrueAlarm Smokes installed throughout. Signal coding is pulse.

In 1997, a 2904 strobe was replaced with a Wheelock RSS strobe.

In 1999, one area is remodeled into a family wing. A Simplex 4004 was installed and tied into the 2120. The signals there are Wheelock NS Horn/Strobes and Wheelock RSS strobes. Pull stations are Simplex 2099s and there are TrueAlarm Smokes. Everything else stays the same.

In 2004, a Simplex chime+strobe plate was found inoperative during a fire drill, and was replaced with a Siemens UMMT Horn/Strobe.

In 2006, a Simplex 4521-30 was replaced with a Simplex 2099.

In 2010, the fire alarm systems were all upgraded. The three Simplex panels were replaced with a Siemens MXLV, the new signals are Gentex SSPK24WLRP Speaker/Strobes, with Gentex Commander 3 remote strobes. Pulls are Siemens rebranded RSG T-Bars, with System Sensor i3 Smokes installed throughout. Speaker/strobes play a slow whoop tone and a voice message.

A Target was built in 1994. The building started off with a Fire-Lite MS-4 system, and the fire alarms were Gentex AVP strobe plates holding old GMH horns sounding in continuous. There were only four alarms, with one located on each wall of the store. There were no smoke detectors, and the pulls were Fire-Lite BG-10s located at the entrance door and near the three emergency exits near the AVP-HGs. The emergency exits themselves sounded the alarms after 15 seconds of them being open.

In 1998, AVPs that had first gen. HG horns were installed within the store. Each wall got another alarm, and some pillars in the middle of the store received the alarms too. Also, the one installed on the wall of the store with the bathrooms was demounted and moved closer towards where the bathrooms were. The older backbox remains, and the system still sounds in continuous,

In 1999, a GMH on the left wall was not sounding, and it was mistakenly replaced by a Gentex SHG

In 2004, the employees areas was given second generation Gentex SHGs, with GX-90 horns in each office. They also put GX-90S horn/strobes in the bathrooms. The ones in the restrooms were sounding in continuous, but the SHGs and GX-90s in the employee’s area sounded in code 3.

One year later, the store finished constructing a Cafe, and they put GX-90Ses there.

In late 2016, the store closed for remodeling due to many burnt out lights and bad smells. Thus, in 2017, it finally reopened, and the entire store was different. The system is now a Fire-Lite MS-9050UD. Alarms now consist of white Gentex Commander 4 horn/strobes and strobes that sound in Code-3, which is formatted as a line of horn/strobes, a line of strobes, and so on. The cafe and other areas with lower ceilings were given Gentex Commander 3 horn/strobes. Places like the bathrooms and employees area weren’t remodeled at all, but the bathrooms still received Commander 4 strobes, and the employees area had Commander 3 horn/strobes with Commander 4 strobes in the offices. Since they weren’t remodeled, the older alarm backboxes were given white plates that covered them. Smoke detectors are Fire-Lite SD355s and pulls are BG-12LXs. A BG-10 in the employee’s room wasn’t replaced.

Sounds like a very bad neutral connection, if the neutral wasn’t totally disconnected with the hots still connected! Worse than 285 Clinton St. in Springfield, Vt.

In short, it means that devices intended for 120V input, are screwed and 240V devices should be OK… So I do expect blown lights, except for with auto-adapting ballasts for fluorescents and auto-adapting regulators for LEDs… That would probably mean fried stuff that’s made for 120V!

Northview Elementary School which was built in 1958, currently has these alarms all around the campus and they are arranged like this.
Hallways and other large areas not stated have Space Age Electronic VA4 horn/strobes

The breezeway which connects the two buildings to each other and has two floors, one over another, have Faraday 6120 horn/strobes

The instrumental music room, which is up on the second floor, has a Federal Signal 450D horn with a VALS strobe attached to it

The media center, special education coordinator’s office and project area have what are probably the oldest and closest to the original alarms in the school, which are Standard 450 horns behind Space Age Electronics AV32 light plates that flash when the system goes off

The ESOL classroom has an Amseco SH-1224 horn/strobe

Finally, the guidance offices have a Siemens U-MMT horn/strobe
brown florescent lights, yea.

I had a crappy neutral at 285 Clinton St. in Springfield, Vt. and the first symptom I saw, was this, with the furnace on, the UPS showed the voltage out of my outlet actually rising! So then I decided to do another test, to run both the furnace and the range in the kitchen at the same time, then I saw my UPS show 131V! Yikes!

This is the massive and completely sprawled out system that is set up at Union High School.
Alarms in the hallways and other areas that need alarms but aren't mentioned are Wheelock 7001Ts

The graphic arts lab, C.A.S.T. lab and language lab have Wheelock 7002s

The woodshop lab and the carpentry lab each have a Wheelock 34 on a Space Age Electronics AV32 light plate that stays on when there is a fire drill with the horn in continuous

The auxiliary gym and foods kitchen both have Wheelock 7002Ts

The drafting technology lab, group activity classroom and lecture hall have Wheelock NSs

Finally, the weight training room and the lecture hall each have Wheelock MT4s set to code-3 tone
That’s the same thing as the Wheelock MT that was added to horticulture class (Crotched Mountain Rehabilitation Center, in the Pierce building) in 1998, IIRC, IRL, which is right off of tech ed, which has a Gentex SHG. Horticulture class, IRL, had nothing before except maybe a Simplex T-bar…
The panel is a Simplex 2001 in continuous. I had a feeling that a folk may have been complaining of being unable to hear the file alarm, even though there’s the other signal mentioned outside of the rooms…

I also heard one just like it on a video documentary of September 11, 2001! Folks were checking one of the buildings and there was enough stuff for a smoke detector to be triggered.

Mattawan High School has a system that is set up like this.
All hallways and other areas not mentioned have Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates with no FIRE lettering and they blink in march time

The Food and Fitness Lab and the Child Development Lab each have a Space Age Electronics 2DCD horn on AV32 light plates with no FIRE lettering which also blink in march time

The library has a Gentex GMS

The art room has a Faraday 6120

The music classroom and the independent skills classroom each have a Wheelock NS

Finally, the engineering lab and the lecture hall each have a Simplex 4903-9236
Quick addendum to Mattawan High School though that I forgot about. The portable building which has 10 classrooms has Wheelock NS’s and the outdoor courtyard has Faraday 6120s on weatherproof backboxes below small awnings which are also used to protect them.

Friarwood Middle/High School, built in 1993, originally had a Cerberus Pyrotronics MXL-V fire alarm system. The signals were mostly Gentex SHG horn/strobes installed in the hallways, music room, band room, library, locker rooms, art studio, cafeteria, and art room, with Gentex HG Horns in classrooms, Gentex GXS strobes in restrooms, auditorium, middle school gym, and high school gym, Ceiling Mounted Atlas Sound Speakers in the auditorium and gyms, and Federal Signal 41X horns outside. Pull stations were Cerberus Pyrotronics MS501s and smokes are CP DI-D2s. Signal coding for the horns is continuous, while the speakers play a slow whoop tone with a voice message, similar to this:

The school bell is a 5-second tone over the Intercom, which is a Rauland Telecenter III. The master clock panel is integrated into the intercom rack.

In 1997, a Gentex HG horn was replaced with a Gentex Commander 1 Horn/Strobe.

In 1998, a 2 story technology/engineering wing was added on. A Cerberus Pyrotronics MXL was tied into the existing panel. The signals there are ceiling mounted Gentex SHG Horn/Strobes and Gentex HG horns in the hallways, with Gentex Commander 2 Horn/Strobes in the classrooms, and restrooms gaining Commander 2 remote strobes. Outside, they put Gentex GMH Horns behind weatherproof covers. Pulls were CP MSI-20Bs, and smokes were System Sensor 2400s. Signal coding was Code 3.

In 2001, two SHGs in the main wing were replaced with U-HNH-MCS Horn/Strobes.

In 2003, a Fire Lite BG-10 replaced a MS501 in the high school gym.

In 2005, an Atlas Sound speaker in the auditorium broke and was replaced with a Siemens rebranded Faraday 2955 speaker.

In 2006, a DI-D2 smoke in the kiln room broke, and was replaced with a System Sensor i3.

In 2007, a 41X Horn broke and was replaced with a Gentex GEH-2 Horn with a GOE cover.

In 2009, a HG horn in a science lab broke and was replaced with a Siemens rebranded Wheelock ZNS Horn/Strobe.

In 2011, two MS501s were found inoperative and replaced with Siemens rebranded RSG T-Bars.

In 2013, a new 2-story classroom addition was built. A Siemens FireFinder XLS panel was added and tied into the MXL. The signals were mostly Wheelock HSR Horn/Strobes, along with Wheelock STR strobes to add strobe coverage, and weatherproof Wheelock MT-24VFR Horn/Strobes were installed outside. Pull stations were Siemens rebranded RSG T-Bars, along with Siemens smokes scattered throughout. Signal coding is code-3.
In 2015, they remodeled 3 of the main wing classrooms into a STEM lab. As such they added 3 Wheelock HSR Horn/strobes replacing the 3 HGs in the 3 remodeled classrooms.

This is how Evergreen Mill Elementary School is set up.
The hallways within the school as well as other big rooms and spaces not mentioned have the same notification appliances as each other, which are Federal Signal 450 horns (which were relabeled Simplex 4041s) on Space Age Electronics AV34 light plates. The horn is in continuous but the light stays on.

Both the science lab and the music classroom have Space Age Electronic 2DCD horns on Space Age Electronics AV32 light plates. The horn is in continuous but the light stays on.

The computer lab and the media center have a Simplex 2901-9806 horn on a 2903 light plate. The horn is in continuous but the light stays on. Are you seeing a pattern here?

The art room has an Edwards 895B Adaptahorn horn/strobe located on the wall to the right of the doorway.

The resource classroom has a Siemens U-MHT horn/strobe which is set to code-3 horn.

Finally the Preschool STEP classroom and the from office also both have a Wheelock MT-24-LSM horn/strobe set to code-3 horn.
