Make up a system

The Andrew Jackson elementary school was originally built in 1957, with the following alarms…

The panel was an Edwards Custom 6500.
Edwards 10-inch Adaptabels were the signals.
The pull stations were the large coded Edwards pulls that looked like larger 270-SPOs.
Metal Chemtronics heat detectors on the ceilings in several places.

In 1977, the old panel broke down and it was replaced with a Simplex 4208 set on March Time. The coded Edwards pulls wouldn’t work with the 4208, so they were all replaced with Simplex 4251-20 pull stations. The 10-inch Adaptabels and the Chemtronics heat detectors were left intact.

Then in 1989, Simplex 4904-9105 remote strobes were installed on the ceilings in most places.

In 2002, the old Simplex/Edwards system was finally taken out, and the new system was as follows…

The panel is now a Simplex 4010 panel with a 4003 voice-evac module.
The signals are Simplex 4903-9150 speaker/strobes.
The pull stations are Simplex 4099-9003 T-bars.
The Chemtronics heat detectors were replaced with TrueAlarm smokes.

a petsmart has a simplex 4001U voice panel with E70 speaker/strobes, T-bar pulls, and truealarm smokes. Stoppers were installed after a dog’s tail got caught on a pull resulting in a false alarm.

I am doing two school systems based off books by Todd Strasser…

The Burt Itchupt middle school (from the “Help, I’m Trapped In…” book series) was built in 1965 and had an OLD Simplex 4246-1 system with 4030 flush-mount horns in most places except the hallways, which have 4030-2 horns. The pulls are Simplex 4263-10s. The pulls send out the coding to the signals. They also have metal Chemtronics heat detectors. The school bells are old 6-inch Simplex bells. In the hallways they are mounted behind grilles. In the gym they were muffled with tape and cloth over them so they made a buzzing sound.

The Hart Marks K-8 school (from the “Don’t Get Caught…” book series) was built in 1974 and originally had a Simplex 4208 panel with an annunciator in the main entrance, and the signals are Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates (with no “FIRE” lettering), the pull stations are Simplex 4251-30s. However, the smaller gymnasium and on the outside has a Simplex 4051 horn on an SAE AV32 light plate, the outdoor one has “FIRE” lettering on it. There are also metal Chemtronics heat detectors. In 1986, the old 4208 panel broke down, so Simplex came and replaced it with a Simplex 2001 panel set on 20bpm March Time (the old panel was set to Continuous), and the old annunciator was not compatible with the 2001 so it was replaced with a Simplex graphic annunciator. The school bells are gray 6-inch Simplex bells, installed behind grilles. Outside they have 10-inch bells behind grilles.
(BTW, I partially based the Hart Marks system off of the Davis K-8 school’s fire alarm system).

Here are two buildings that both contain a Simplex 4100U system.

A 48-Story Marriott Hotel built in 2003.

Signals

 1. Red Addressable Simplex TrueAlert Wall Mount Speaker/Strobes (4903-9352) located at the main lobby and near the exits.

 2. Addressable Ceiling Mount TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes (4903-9364) in the majority of the corridors.

 3. Simplex 4904-9350 addressable TrueAlert remote strobes in bathrooms both near the main lobby and inside all hotel rooms.

 4. Simplex 4902-9716 TrueAlert remote speakers in the hotel rooms.

 5. System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic SP200W ceiling mount speakers and S241575W (white) wall mount remote strobes in the restaurant.

 6. Wheelock E70’s in the swimming pool area, ballrooms and meeting rooms.

 7. Wheelock RSS-24MCW’s in the locker room and in the fitness center.

 8. One Wheelock ET vandal resistant speaker/strobe in one area on the first floor that look like this:

 9. SpectrAlert Advance SPSR Speaker/Strobes are expected to be installed in the upcoming new corridors on the 1st floor expected to be finished by early January 2009.

 10. SpectrAlert Advance SPRV Speakers are expected to be installed in the hotel rooms in the upcoming new corridors that I just previously mentioned in #9.

 11. Wheeelock ETWP Speaker/Strobes as the outdoor signals.

Initiating Devices

 1. Simplex 4099-9003 Dual-Action T-bars for the majority of the building with some of them with Stopper II Covers over them.

 2. Simplex 4099-9002 Break glass T-bars near 70% of all exits.

 3. There is only one 4099-9001 Single action T-bar across from the elevators on the first floor.

 4. Simplex 4098-9792 with 4098-9714 photoelectric smokes.

Annunciators
4603-9101’s

Evacuation message
*4 1/2 Whoops* Attention. Attention. Attention. An emergency has been reported. All occupants walk to the nearest stairway exit, and walk down to your assigned re-entry floor, or main lobby. Do not use the elevators. Walk to the nearest stairway. Do not use the elevators. Walk to the nearest stairway. *cycle repeats*
A HUGE Mall

This mall originally had a 2001 voice evac system, then upgraded to a 4100 system, then upgraded to a 4100U system in 2005.

Signals

 1. Simplex TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes (4903-9352’s [addressable, wall mount, 110cd, red]) and (-9355’s [addressable, wall mount, 110cd, white]).

 2. Some areas have 4903-9149’s (same as a -9150 but 110cd)

 3. The bathrooms have 4904-9350’s.

 4. The 4th floor has LifeAlarms on 2903 light plates still intact and some 445-026 speakers mounted on the walls.

 5. Some restaurants have System Sensor SpectrAlert Classic SP200W ceiling mount speakers and S241575 wall mount remote strobes.

 6. Some areas have Spectra ceiling mount speaker/strobes (SP2C2475).

Initiating Devices

 1. A mixture of 4251-20’s, 4251-30’s, and one 4251-113 chevron.

 2. Simplex 4099-9003 Dual-Action T-bars for the majority of the building with some of them with Stopper II Covers, most of them replacing the 4251’s.

 3. Some of the t-bars are Simplex 4099-9001’s replacing where the other 4251 chevrons once were.

 4. Simplex 4098-9792 with 4098-9714 photoelectric smokes.

Evacuation message
*7 rounds of the Code 3 Tone* Attention. Attention. Attention. An emergency has been reported. All occupants walk to the nearest stairway exit, and walk down to your assigned re-entry floor, or main lobby. Do not use the elevators. Walk to the nearest stairway. Do not use the elevators. Walk to the nearest stairway. *cycle repeats*
Whew, this took me a long time to make this post.

a mitsukoshi store has a notifier SFP-2402/2404 adressable panal, I3 smokes, BG-12 pulls behind glass stoppers, commander3s and spertalerts Advances

A medium sized health club built in '86 had a Moose z1100e rebranded as an ADT Focus 55. There were window reed switches, and as for the fire alarm portion, a few System Sensor MA-12/24D’s set to 800 Hz continuous.
There are a few smokes installed throughout, which are ESL 445CTs. A small ADT sticker is on each smoke, and there are several old ADT pull stations resembling BG-8’s.
The later years of this system saw many false alarms, since the smokes kept latching from dust buildup.

In 2001, the system was taken out. In it’s place, 2 panels were put in. One was a DSC PC1550, the other an ADT Focus Cadet They tore out all of the 445’s and the BG-8, and put in 429CTAD smokes (addressable 449s) , and an ADT BG-12LX. However, they left one 445 in, which was in the men’s locker room. This has a mini monitor module behind it, making it addressable.
The signals were discarded in favor of several white Wheelock AS’s.

A 2-story Target Store. Yet this is another Simplex 4100U system.

The pulls are mainly 4099-9003’s throughout the store but there are 4099-9001’s near the area.

The alarms are addressable TrueAlert horn/strobes (4903-9451), TrueAlert Remote Strobes in the bathrooms (4904-9350), yet an RSS strobe in the section where you go to return the things that you bought.

4603-9101 annunciators can be found in some sections of the store.

The signal coding for this system is set to temporal code 3.

Based off my school:
St. Francis of Assisi High School was an all boys HS built in 1954. The original system was an IBM 4201 panel set to march time (like in http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SNI_BfpdCks]this video), with IBM 4030 horns and IBM rebranded Faraday chevrons. IBM 6’’ vibrating bells were used for class change.

In 1957, IBM sold its fire alarm division to Simplex.

In 1967, two seniors messing around in wood shop damaged a 4030. It was replaced with a 4040.

In 1972, A 4030 in a hallway going to the cafeteria (at the time) died and was also replaced by a 4040.

In 1980, the 4201 panel had several code relays go bad. It was replaced with a Simplex 2001 panel set to 90 BPM march time. All the chevrons were replaced with 4251-20 T bars, except one in a backstage storage room, which was disconnected. Also, many of the 4030s were replaced with 4050’s. Older style Truealarm smokes were also installed.

In 1990, St. Francis of Assisi HS merged with St. Anne HS, a nearby all girls school due to low admissions at both schools.

In 1992, a Radionics security system was installed.

In 2001, major ugrates were made to the system. The 2001 was replaced with an adressable 4020 panel set to code 3. The Radionics security panel was tied in to the Priority 2 terminal. Nearly all the old AC horns were ripped out and plated over, with Truealert horn/strobes placed at intervals in the hallways. However, the 4030 in the autos garage and the 4040s in the wood shop and the basement hallway were disconnected and left in place. The 4251-20s were also removed and plated over, and replaced with 4099 adressable t bars with stopper 2 covers. The old Truealarms were replaced with newer versions. The IBM class change bells were disconnected and replaced with a tone over the PA.

Older style TrueAlarm smokes- you mean those big round things?

Also, Simplex 2001’s can output 12 VDC, 24 VDC, or 120 VAC. For a Simplex 2001 to be used with 4040’s and 4050’s, the horns have to be 120 VAC and the panel has to be 120 VAC as well. Usually they are 24 VDC and used with 4051’s.

Wish my HS would do something like that to its 40 year old system. It’s 2008 and they still haven’t replaced it. It and another ES in my town are the only buildings I’ve seen with vintage alarms.

The Andrew Jackson Middle School is set up like this.

This school was originally built in 1979.

The panel was originally a 2001. The signal coding was 20 BPM March Time. The signals were Simplex 4051’s on 4050-80 light plates and 4251-30’s but there can also be some 4251-20 and 4251-113 pulls scattered around as well. (This system is similar to the alarms and the coding at wile_e2005’s school).

Sometime later, 5 of the 4050-80’s lights blew out, so they replaced 3 of them with 2901-9833’s on 2903 light plates w/ the vandal resistant grille, and two of them were replaced w/ 2903+2901-9838’s w/o the vandal resistant grille.

A few years later, the 4051+80’s throughout the entire second floor and in the cafeteria malfunctioned. The 4051+80’s upstairs were replaced with 2903+2901-9806’s. The 4051+80’s at the cafeteria were mounted on two sides of the cafeteria on the walls. They just left the holes on the walls and mounted another -9806 but this time on a 4903-9004 light plate (I believe it’s the ceiling mount version of the 4903-9001 light plate) and they have vertical 4904-9001 remote lights (I hope there’s such thing as that). They have replaced most of the 4051+80’s with -9838’s on 4903-9001 light plates. They were also added in the bigger classrooms.

In that same year, the 2001 was replaced with a 4002 due to problems. Same signal coding as before.

Then in the early '90s, they replaced 2903+9838’s and some of the 4903-9001+9838’s with new 9838’s on 4903-9101 strobe plates. They also have replaced a 4051 with a Pre-ADA MASS (800hz) and didn’t bother to get rid of the light plate and disconnected the light. Which looks exactly like this:

They have a 2901-9333 bell mounted outside.

But in 1994, the 4251-30’s and most of the 4251-20’s were replaced with 2099-9754 single action and 2099-9103 break glass T-bars. Most of the old signals (mostly 2903+9833’s and 4051+80’s) were replaced by 4903-9219’s and -9220’s. The girl’s locker room has a -9805 on a 4903-9501 strobe plate w/ 4904-9105 strobe while the boy’s locker room has a 9219 in it.

Then in 1995 or so, they replaced the 2 4051+80’s in the gym with one of them being a 4903-9238 and a 4903-9240 (same as a -9238 but horizontal).

Then in 2000, some of the -9219’s were replaced by -9252’s, and a 9838 on one of the 9101 strobe plates in a classroom was replaced with a Wheelock AH!

In 2004, some of the remaining 2903+9833’s and 4051+80’s (except one) were replaced with Wheelock MT-241575W horn/strobes (continuous horn).

Then in 2007, TrueAlert strobes in the bathrooms and small rooms and horn/strobes were added and the 4002 was replaced by a 4005 FACP but still on 20BPM March Time. The 4251-113’s were replaced by newer 2099-9756 pulls.

Based on my middle school:

The Thomas Jefferson Middle School was built in 1957. The original system consisted of Gamewell dual-action coded pulls with unknown single-stroke bells and vibrating class change bells.

This system remained virtually unchanged until 1983, when the coded pulls were replaced by ‘Local Alarm’ Gamewell centuries and an unknown panel, potentially Gamewell.

Ten years later, the panel started acting up and the ADA was passed. The old centuries were
replaced by newer ones, the bells by Wheelock MTs on continuous horn, and an unknown Fire-Lite panel.

In early 2004, the school district decided to make the school 6-8 instead of 5/6. A new addition was added to the gym for extra storage and the locker rooms were remodled back into locker rooms (one had been the art room, the other was storage). The new additions have Wheelock NSs set to code 3. In addition, the PA/class change system was completely overhauled. The bells were removed and plated over, and a tone over the PA was used.

If you are referring to the Edgar B. Davis K-8 school, then you are correct. Except the only differences are that school was built in 1974, and the 2001 panel (or maybe it’s a 4002) was a later installation probably because the original panel died (it was probably a Simplex 4246, 4248, 4207, 4208 or similar model from the 1970s). And the 4050-80s didn’t have fire on the lens, most of the pulls were 4251-30s with a few Edwards 270-SPOs, and they also had a SAE AV32 light plate with red lens on one of the alarms in the main gym (I think the horn in it was a 4051), and another one like this was in the small gym.

Oh, and what was the annunciator for the Andrew Jackson middle school like? Did they stick with the usual 2001-style annunciator, or did it look something like THIS?

And did one of the Simplex 4051+80s have a bad install job like THIS?

Sorry, I just couldn’t resist. LOL

Wile_e2005, If one of the 4051’s were mounted badly like that, I would have mentioned it (like how I mentioned how they did that rush install with that pre-ADA MASS), but I don’t know about the graphic annunciator. I would probably mention it the next time I make up another system involving 4051+80’s. However this next system that I made up does not have 4051+80’s but they do have those same light plates.

The Johnson Forester High School has a unique FA system with a unique FA system history. This was originally built in the late 70’s/early 80’s.

Original System

The system was a 2001 voice evacuation system with 445-026 generic speakers… on 4050-80 light plates! (I don’t even know if the 2001 voice evac panel came when the 4050-8x light plates came out, so please let me know) Some of the -026 speakers were mounted on 4050-85 light plates without the “FIRE” lettering on them. The pulls were 4251-30 T-bars.

Mid 1980’s upgrade

30% of the 445+80’s and 445+85’s were replaced by LifeAlarm speakers on 2903 Light Plates and some of the 2903 replacements had the 445-026 speakers mounted on those as well.

Late 1980’s/Early 90’s addition

Since the 2001 couldn’t accommodate more room with more alarms and initiating devices, they added a separate Edwards Voice Evac system. This covers the big gym (there is a small gym that is part of the original construction of this school), art rooms, music rooms, and tech rooms.

The panel is an old Edwards voice evac panel that had http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qUdh_Y8q3cY this voice evac message. The signals are Edwards 892 Speaker/Strobes and the pulls are Edwards 270-SPO’s.

Late 90’s/Early 2000’s Upgrade

The old EST panel shorted out and it was replaced with and EST2 panel w/ voice evac. Some of the 892’s were replaced with Integrity speaker/strobes and some of them being Wheelock E-LSM Speaker/Strobes.

This was the voice evac message
*Slow Whoop 2x* There has been an emergency reported in the building. Leave the building immediately using marked stairways and exits. Do not use elevators. *repeats*
The change of plan

In September of 2002, they have decided that they would replace both fire alarm systems by 2004 and they decided that they would close the school for the 2003-2004 year.

Before the renovation and after school ended

The installers replaced some of the 892 speaker/strobes from some hallways and all classrooms except technology with EST Genesis Speaker/Strobes (White) whithout realizing that the new system was going to be a new Simplex system. Those installers misunderstood what was going to be replacing the two systems: they thought the new system was going to be an EST3 system.

After the renovation
The panel is a brand new Simplex 4100U system w/ voice evac.

The remaining 445+80’s and 85’s, and 2903+LifeAlarm Speakers (except one) were all replaced by TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes.

The 892’s, Integrities, and Genesis Speaker/Strobes were kept.

The 270-SPO’s in the gym were replaced with newer 270-SPO’s w/ a Simplex monitor module attached to it.

The 4251-30’s were all replaced with new 4099-9003 pull stations except one from the main office was replaced by a 4099-9001.

All the Edwards and Simplex smokes were replaced by 4098-9792 smokes plus 4098-9714 heads.

This is the voice evacuation now:
*4 1/2 rounds of Slow Whoop* "Attention." (x3) An emergency has been reported. All occupants walk to the nearest stairway exit, and walk down to your assigned re-entry floor or main lobby. Do not use the elevator. Walk to the nearest stairway, do not use the elevator. Walk to the nearest stairway.
Remaining parts
The EST2 panel, classic EST panel, 2001 panel, Edwards heats, 4251’s, older 270-SPO’s and old Simplex smoke detectors were ended up being sold on eBay.

My dream house would have the following system. (I wish this house was real, but it isn’t)

This house was built in 2008.

Although this is a house, it has a Simplex 4100U panel.

The indoor pulls are all Simplex 4099-9002 break glass pulls, every year during the fire alarm test, all the pulls are made sure to have glass and break rods.

This house has outdoor pulls too (don’t worry, it’s about as protected as a celebrity’s house so there won’t be too many false alarms from the outdoor pulls. They also have weatherproof covers) They will be Simplex 2099-9139s (those are conventional though, so I don’t know if they’d actually work, if they don’t there will be no outdoor pulls)

There is a Simplex test station in the control room.

The alarm signals are all Simplex TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes.

The message is the one bakepatient/alarmpatient was talking about in the second quote

Some of the alarms are ceiling mount, but most are wall mount. All the wall mount alarms are red and all the ceiling mount alarms are white. Most of the rooms are big enough that they need speaker/strobes. For the smaller rooms, there is either a wall mount TrueAlert remote strobe, or a ceiling mount TrueAlert remote strobe (the ones that are rectangular)

The annunciators are the typical kind used with 4100U systems located at the front and back door.

The outdoor alarms are red Wheelock ET70WPs (weatherproof E70s), unless, does Simplex make weatherproof alarms? If they do, the outdoor alarms will be Simplex.

The smokes are TrueAlarms without sounders. The heat detectors are also TrueAlarms.

The candela rating on most of the strobes are whatever they need to be (I don’t pay attention that much to candela ratings)

There is an alarm test every year, since only me and a couple robots (remember, this is a MADE UP house) live here, there don’t need to be fire drills. We already know the procedure.

The emergency exits are located on all three floors in the area where there are no stairs. There is a fire escape ladder for the third floor deck. The other emergency exits are glass windows. You break a break glass cover and push a red button (the kind you see for emergency shut offs usually). The button will unlock the window so it can hinge out. It won’t fall off, it will just open like a door. A white Wheelock MIZ will go off to alert that the emergency exit is open. A message will be sent to the control room too. Once out the exit, if you are upstairs, climb down the fire escape ladder.

That is the overall system, feel free to leave comments.

ok, here’s one:

it’s a grocery store that was built in 96’, it’s fairly new. it had a Moose Z2000 security system. siren was an ADEMCO Wave 1, and on the Auxillary circuit, there was a 7002T. the smokes were 445CTs

in 98’ the 7002T died and was replaced by a a Federal Vibratone 350.

in 05’ the 350 got shot during a burglary(in broad daylight, the Z2000 wasn’t armed, and there were several people in the store.), and was replaced by 8 ASs. the Wave 1 also burned out shortly afterwards, it was replaced by 2 Wave 2 sirens; one in the front of the store, one in the back.

in 06’, a Simplex 4005 was added to the mix. the 445CTs were replaced by ADT rebranded EST SIGA-PS smoke detectors, and the ASs were replaced by 4903-9217 horn/strobes, and 2099-9754(correct me if i’m wrong about the model number) pulls were added.

in 07’ there was an extension to the store, and the extension got an EST QuickStart with EST SIGA-PSs, and Integrities. someone thought it would be nice if the Z2000 had a fire alarm N/A and put in a Wheelock MB-G10-24, and added a “turn-signal” relay to the Auxillary Circuit, so when the Z2000, 4005, and Quickstart all went into alarm, you would hear the MB, the 9217s, and the Integrities all go off in marchtime.

the system is still up and running, although the Z2000 had the security control keypad replaced with the “Fire Version”, the MB had an RSSP put behind it, the Wave 2s had Federal Fireball strobes(in blue) mounted next to them, and the 9217s were swapped with the white versions, to blend in with the wall.

feel free to comment on this.

Ummm… 4903-9418, 7002T’s were discontinued before 1996, FS 350’s were discontinued waaay before '98, and -9217’s (and its white version of it) were also discontinued sometime in the late 90’s.

Anyway, another system (This one again has a 4100U system replacing another system)

This is an office building built in the mid to late 90’s.

When it was built, the signals are Wheelock E-LSM Speaker/Strobes and the pulls were Fire-Lite BG-10LX’s. There are Wheelock LSM strobes where strobe-only coverage is needed (i.e. bathrooms, small offices, etc.).

In 2001, the building expanded. The signals there are Wheelock E70 Speaker/Strobes and Speakers and BG-12LX’s and RSS’s in bathrooms, small offices, etc. Some of the RSS’s replaced some of the LSM strobes.

However, there can be some odds and ends found with the building expansion and in the original building structure. In the new section, Integrity speaker/strobes, Spectra speaker/strobes, Wheelock ET vandal resistant speaker/strobes (horizontal strobe) can be found. In the original structure of the building, some of the same stuff from the expansion (exception being the ET’s), and some Honeywell generic speakers found in some closets.

The voice evac panel was a Safepath voice evac panel slaved off of a Fire-Lite addressable panel with the following message:

But in 2006, they decided to switch to Simplex. They replaced the BG-10LX’s and BG-12LX’s with 4099-9003 T-Bar pulls. Simplex TrueAlert Addressable Speaker/Strobes were added (along with TA addressable remote strobes) and some of them replacing all the Honeywell speakers and some of the E-LSM speaker/strobes. The Fire-Lite annunciators were ALL replaced with 4603-9101 annunciators. All smokes were replaced by 4098-9792 addressable smokes w/ 4098-9714 heads. The two panels were replaced by a 4100U system.

The message used is ripped off from the 4003 message:
*4 1/2 rounds of slow whoop* Attention, attention, attention. An emergency situation has been detected in this building. Proceed to the nearest exit and leave the building. Do not re-enter the building until directed to, by the proper authorities. *repeats*
In mid-2008, SpectrAlert Advance SPSRV Speaker/Strobes were added and some of them replacing some of the E-LSM Speaker/Strobes.

The BG-10LX’s, BG-12LX’s, and all the other Fire-Lite rubbish ended up being sold on eBay.

I beg to differ:
http://www.federalsignal-indust.com/default.asp?pageID=4&lookup=747

Federal Signal still makes the Vibratone 350s, but they are very rarely used as fire alarms these days. They have newer scoreboards in the gym at my college, both of which use Vibratone 350 horns (I know, because I heard them go off and I saw the grilles) And Federal Signal still makes the Vibratone 450 as well. Here’s one of them used in a halon system at my college (it’s obviously newer, probably installed in the late 1990s or early 2000s)

I know. And your point is…?

Here’s another I thought of for buildings in the city I made in SC4, Elm Park:
