Uh, I don’t think they made 7002T’s in 1986.
Well there is a Toys 'R Us in my city that has Wheelock 7002T horn/strobes and Fire-Lite BG-6 pulls. I belive BG-6s were discontinued in the mid-to-late 1980s. I know the BG-10 pulls was around since 1987 since that’s when Ben’s elementary school was opened.
BUT, I don’t think the Simplex T-bars came around until at least 1974. I believe Simplex systems from the early 1970s just used either the Chevrons, the Edwards 270-SPOs (like my high school and Simplex4050’s junior high school) or the big coded 4263-10s. I said 1974 because the Davis elementary school built in 1974 (where I went for kindergarten and a summer program between in 2000 between elementary and junior high) had Simplex 4251-30 (break-glass T-bars) as the primary pull, and this was the system from when the school was originally built (the panel was either a Simplex 4207 or 4208, and the signals are Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 retrofit plates). I think the 4251-20 and 4251-30 came out around the same time. I know that the buildings at my college built in 1978 had Simplex 4251-20 T-bar pulls (the FA, FH and A buildings still have them)

A hotel building in San Francisco constructed around 1986.
Panel is a Simplex 4002. Signals are 4903-9219 horn/strobes coded to “4002” style code 3. There are 4251-20 T-bars in each hallway, and as for the smokes, there are 2098 series Simplex smokes in the hallways, and ESL 445CST sounder smokes in the rooms. There are polarity reversal modules on each zone, and they cause each floor’s sounder smokes to sound in unison during an alarm.
They went through a system upgrade in 2005, and the system was replaced with a Notifier ONYX series NFS2-3030. EIA-485 remote annunciators were installed at each main entrance/exit. Signals were replaced with Wheelock NS horn strobes- code 3 and strobes synced. The smoke detectors in the hallway were replaced with FSP-851 analog addressable smokes, and the smokes in the rooms are replaced with FSP-851 smokes on B501BH sounder bases.
Pull stations are replaced with NBG-12LXs with Stopper II covers over them.
In the basement, FSH-751 HARSH series smokes are installed.

The Googolplex Cinemas somewhere located in the middle of the state of New York, was a state-of-the-art movie theater for its time upon first opening in 1980. It has a two-story theater housing 20 screens (plans were made to expand the theater every five years, but it never took off), stadium seating in each auditorium, a food court, and even a Lux Level for the wealthy people.
When the building was originally built in 1980, its fire alarm system was a Simplex 2001 panel set on March Time. The signals were Simplex 4051 horns on 4050-80 light plates (ones without “FIRE” on the lens) and the pull stations were Simplex 4251-30 break-glass. The smoke detectors were the old late 1970s/early 1980s “wiffle-ball” smokes like in this pic…
In 1994, most of the 4251-30s had the break-glass frames and hammers and glass removed. A couple of them had the frames and hammers intact.
In 1999, the movie theater was renovated, and a new fire alarm system replaced the old one. The new panel was a Simplex 4100 with built-in voice-evacuation, and the signals were Simplex 4903-9168 speaker/strobes, the pull stations were now Simplex 4099-9003 dual-action T-bars with Stopper IIs installed over them. The “wiffle ball” smokes were replaced with Simplex 4098-9792+9714 TrueAlarm smokes. But in a utility basement, two 4051s/4050-80s are intact as is a 4251-30 pull.
Man, this thread is dead. I thought I’d bring some life back into it, this time with a BAD fire alarm system upgrade! :twisted:
An elementary school (with preschool and grades K-6), built in 1988, had a Simplex 4002 panel in the main office, and a 4602-9201 and 4602-9202 annunciator setup at the main entrance. The signals were Simplex 2901-9806 horns on 2903 strobe plates, and the pulls were Simplex 4251-30 break-glass T-bars, and they had Simplex 2098-9577 smokes (knockoff of the System Sensor “doorknob” smokes). Signal coding was March Time.
But in 1997, the school decided to waste money by having practically everything labeled “Simplex” removed from the school! They removed the 4002 panel and the annunciator and put in a Silent Knight panel, and the annunciator was never replaced! And they got rid of all the Simplex 2901-9806 horns, pulled the strobes out of the 2903 plates, taped over the wiring where the strobes were, and installed SpectrAlert horn/strobes (set on Code-3) where the -9806s once were! They also installed a SpectrAlert in each and every classroom, office, even bathrooms! All the 4251-30 pull stations got replaced with Fire-Lite BG-10s! The Simplex -9577 smokes were replaced with cheap Fire-Lite smoke detectors.
And during this upgrade, they also pulled out all of the Simplex clocks! They never reinstalled new clocks in the building, with the exception of a few battery-operated clocks. And the Simplex master clock system panel got replaced with a cheap Faraday alternative. The old Simplex bells, which were 6-inch gray bells (2901-9332s) behind grilles, got replaced with 10-inch Edwards Adaptabels! The Simplex public address system was also replaced with a cheap amplifier and microphone connected to badly-installed loudspeakers all around the school.
The following year, the school really began to go downhill. The students began behaving poorly, almost everyone was getting bad grades, the cafeteria food became rancid, the floor got sticky, and graffiti began to appear everywhere! Windows kept getting broken and needed to be fixed. There were also numerous false fire alarms. Soon by 2005, every school day just had the students running amok and disobeying the teachers and staff, and just played loud hip-hop music over the crappy PA system.
The fire safety levels decreased too during this period. The school never had a sprinkler system installed since it was built in 1988, and the only emergency lighting was near stairwells, there was faulty wiring, several doors had dead bolts, three exit doors were chain-locked, and a mechanical room full of flammable objects used to have a Simplex smoke detector in it, but it was never replaced! And the new smoke detectors slowly began to get defective,and the BG-10 pulls caused quite a few false alarms.
Mercifully, the school was closed in March 2007. It was left abandoned, and was never demolished or remodeled into another building. A new school is slated to open in 2009 featuring a Notifier fire alarm system, where the students that went to this crappy school will be held.
Here’s one.
The Mackicony High School started out in 1985 with a Simplex 4002 and 2903+2901-9806’s. The pulls were 4251-20’s.
In 1995, Mackicony Schools wanted an upgrade. They contacted a local company called Nooba Alarm Services, Inc who installs Notifier and System Sensor. They were called in. They removed the 9806 horns and replaced them with a SpectrAlert mounted in the spot where the horn on the 9806 was. They ripped out the light on the 2903 plate and replaced it with a blank coverplate with two big screws driven right into the 2903 plate. For the pulls, they opened the 4251’s, took the front covers off and screwed a backbox right onto the 4251’s back plate. Then they put a BG-10 on the junction box. For the Simplex wiffle ball smokes, they removed the head, mounted an octagonal box right over the base and installed a System Sensor 2424 smoke detector on to the new box. Finally, the panel was the worse. They ripped all the electronics out of the 4002 case. They removed the glass on the door and put a brand new Notifier panel into the 4002 case. The door wouldnt shut all the way so they cut the door right off. An annunciator in the entryway had a backbox screwed right on top of the annunciator and a Notifier annunciator was mounted on it. It looked horrible. They also installed new SpectrAlert remote strobes in the bathroom. All they did was screwed a backbox to the wall and put the alarm on it. The wire is stapled across the wall until it disappears into a hole where it comes out at a horn/strobe on the other side. They are all T-tapped.
Several BG-10’s and backboxes let go from the 4251’s and fell off the wall. The SpectrAlerts hung by their wires after a while. The exposed remote strobe wires got cut. The annunciator broke. The Fire-Lite panel fell out of the wall once and broke. It got replaced by another one.
In 1998, Mackicony had enough. They decided NOT to call Nooba again because of such a crappy job. They called Simplex Time Recorder Co. who was like “WHAT THE F***” when they saw the awful installation. They removed EVERYTHING. All you could see now are the original backboxes and the wires coming out of them. Simplex installed a brand new 4010 after removing the 4002’s case. All the pulls became 4099-9001’s. Simplex addressable TrueAlarms were used. Vertical 4903’s were installed in place of the gutted 2903’s. 4904 remote strobes were installed in the bathrooms. The annunciator became a brand new 4010 annunciator.
In 2000, Nooba wanted revenge. They disguised themself as Nobobant Alarms Inc.
Nobobant offered to service the system. They did. They installed new backboxes right on top of the 4903’s and put in Spectras although the 4903’s worked fine. They removed the 4099’s and put up BG-10LX’s right on top of the 4099’s backplate. Mackicony called Simplex immediately because it was really bad and like Nooba. Simplex came and put a stop to it and fixed everything.
In 2001, the government shut down Nooba because of their crappy installs and code violations.
Simplex Time Recorder Co. became SimplexGrinnell.
In 2008, the school was added on to. Everything was the same from the current system except they used TrueAlerts instead of 4903’s. The panel got replaced with a new 4100U.

A school was built in 1958, and had red single stroke 6" Adaptabels hooked up to Edwards 270-SPO pulls.
There were also Edwards “dome” ROR heats in each of the rooms, hooked up to a central panel, an Edwards 1303-T.
In 1994, a brand new system upgrade was done, this time a Notifier 5000 was put in.
The pulls were taken out, and in their place, Notifier NBG-1’s resided. All of the heats were taken out and replaced with System Sensor 2400TH smokes. The signals were replaced with white Wheelock speaker strobes.
In 2007, the System 5000 broke, and was replaced with a Fire Lite MS-9600. The pulls were replaced with BG-12LX’s and the smokes are now SD series addressable photo smokes with heat sensors. An LCD-80F annunciator was added near the front entrance. Signals were again replaced with Spectralert Advanced P2R horn strobes.
Since I can’t sleep I’ll make up a system.
Lincoln Memorial Mall was built in 1994 and had a 4002 (8 Zones) Panel installed with 9838 Horns and 4251-20 Pull Stations. No smoke detectors but did have waterflow monitoring. The only store that had their own fire alarm system was The Bon-Ton Store and it had a Silent Knight 5204 with Wheelock RS Strobes and a BG 8 Pull station.
In 1997, Simplex 4903 Remote Strobes were added to the main mall and now all the bigger stores (Sears, JC Penney) had their own small system so they were all interconnected with the 4002 Panel.
In 2006, it was definitely time for an upgrade to meet up with codes. They ripped out all the systems and put in a Simplex 4100U w/Voice Evac. In the main enterance and food court enterance, Simplex 4100U Remote Annunciator Panels were put in. And in all the main stores (Sears, BonTon, JC Penney) 4603-9101 Annunciators were put at their main enterance.
As for alarms, they ripped out the 9838’s and most of the 4903 Remote Strobes. The individual stores took out all their Notification Appliances. In each of the smaller stores, at least one (could be more depending on size of store) Simplex TrueAlert Speaker Only is put in on the ceiling. In the main stores, Simplex TrueAlert ceiling mount speaker/strobes. In the main portion of the mall Simplex TrueAlert wall mount speaker/strobes this includes walking areas and food courts. Simplex TrueAlert Strobes are in small areas such as the food court restaurants and restrooms.
They put in 4099-0003 (Push then Pull) TBars in most areas and Simplex TrueAlarm Addressable Photoelectric Smoke Detectors adequately throughout the mall.

In 1999, things needed to get upgraded. They old voice evacuation system was replaced by a 4005 system tied with a 4003 voice control panel. Some of the 2903+2902-9739’s were replaced by 4903 vertical speaker/strobes (4903-9153).
2003 called for more upgrades. The 2903+2902-9739’s (all of them from the pool area, entranceway, and most of them in some hallways) were replaced by Simplex TrueAlert Speaker/Strobes (4903-9357) with the strobes set to SmartSync Mode. The 4251-113 chevrons were replaced by 2099-9754’s with the newer Simplex logo. Most of the 4251-30’s were replaced, most of them being 2099-9756 pulls (some with Stoppers over them), and only 5 of the -30’s were replaced by newer 2099-9103 break glass T-Bars. Three of the break glass 4251’s had their break glass frames removed and ended up placing Stopper covers over them. The 4251 single action T-Bars (remember, they can be found in the pool) were also replaced by newer 2099-9103’s.
This one is loosely based on the hospital that my dad works at:
The John H. Dawson Hospital was built in 1893. In the 1910's, an old Faraday "fire gong" system was installed with 1137 bells. In 1932, a major addition was added to the hospital. A new IBM system was installed with single-stroke bells and coded pulls. Parts of the old section were renovated in the 40's and early 50's, with the same IBM bells and pulls. Due to financial struggles, the hospital closed in 1956. It reopened in 1959, now called the Smithville Hospital. Parts of the hospital were deteriorating, so reconstruction took place in 1960. The old Faraday panel was replaced with a Simplex panel, along with Simplex 4030 horns. The IBM system was kept in place, with some bells being replaced with 4030's. Throughout the latter of the 60's, more bells were replaced with 4040's and 4050's.
In 1968, another renovation was added. Due to rising costs with Simplex, the hospital decided to drop them and have Honeywell install their new system. The new system was a Honeywell panel and SC806D single-stroke bells. In the late 70's, almost all of the old Faraday and IBM bells were removed and replaced with Wheelock 34's. Fenwal also installed a halon fire suppressant system with Space Age 2DCD horns under AV32 lights. The coded pulls were replaced with S464A's. A few 4030's got replaced with 7002's in the early 80's. In 1983, a study was done to see how patients react during a fire alarm. A realization was made that some patients could be seriously affected by the shock of a loud alarm. As a start, Honeywell replaced nearly all of the Simplex horns with SC806E chimes in sections of the hospital where patients could be disturbed by a fire alarm.
In 1986, a patient in the psychiatric ward got loose and went on a rampage through the hospital, destroying a few alarms in the process. With new vandal-resistant devices being invented, they installed STI Stoppers over the pulls and replaced some Wheelock 34's with 7002T's in 1987. Due to the ADA of 1990, Honeywell installed WST-24 strobes all over the hospital next to alarms that did not have a strobe. More of the IBM and Faraday bells were replaced with 7002T's, Honeywell chimes, and later Wheelock CH electronic chimes.
In 1994, plans were made to add a massive addition to the hospital, nearly doubling it's size. Construction began in '95, but was halted due to a fall-out with the project manager. When construction resumed in '96, the ADA of 1996 now required all strobes to be clear. A Fire-Lite voice evac panel was installed, along with Wheelock ET vandal-resistant speaker/strobes, and E-9025 ceiling-mount speaker/strobes. The same panel and NA's have been installed in the old section of the hospital.

Several years later, most of them were replaced by a mixture of 2901-9838’s and 2901-9833’s on 2903 light plates. The 2001 remained until it started to wind down and it was replaced by a 4002 (120 BPM March Time). The 4251’s were kept.
Sometime later, one of the lights on one of the 2903 light plates with a -9838 on it blew up and it was replaced with a newer -9838 attached to a 4903-9101 strobe plate.
By the time when strobes became completely translucent, Simplex wanted to make some alarm upgrades. They took down ALL the 9833’s and 9838’s (excluding the one on the -9101 strobe plate) on the light plates and here are replacement alarms. First off, the entranceway, the restaurant, meeting rooms, near some exits, the swimming pool room, some in the hallways, and the game room alarms are now (even up to this day) 4903-9219 horn/strobes. The hotel room corridors have mixtures between -9846’s, and 4901-9805’s on 4903-9501 plates w/ 4904-9105 strobes. They took down all the remaining 4051’s and the 4050-80’s, except one, and disconnected the light on that light plate. In fact, one of the 9805’s were mounted on that 4050-80 light plate! Most of the 4251-20’s were kept but some of them were replaced by 2099-9754’s and the 4251-30’s were replaced by 2099-9756’s. Simplex 4904-9137 remote strobes were added in the lavatories near the entranceway and 4904-9501’s were added in the hotel rooms.
In 1999, they tested the alarms and someone has reported that one of the -9805’s is not working right. They ended up replacing it with a Faraday U-HNH remote horn!
