Mechanical/Electrical Engineering and the Fire Protection Field

Hey ya’ll,

So, as my first year in college came to a close a few weeks ago, I started to really think deeply about where I want to go with the rest of my life. Last year, I studied a mechanical engineering concentration at Robert Morris University with the hopes of going into the building and life safety field. I began to do more research as well, and it seems like electrical engineering plays an integral part in this field as well. The issue is that I don’t know which degree is better for going into working with fire alarm and other building systems (mechanical or electrical), and I was hoping that someone who actually works in the field would be able to steer me in the right direction. No colleges around me offer fire protection engineering programs either, and moving out of the area I live in is out of the picture…just hoping I can figure out which degree I truly need before the fall semester rolls around the corner.
