New Member question Simplex 4010 dirty smoke detector

Hello all, I’m new here and have a question about a dirty smoke detector trouble alarm. 1st question is how do identify which smoke detector is dirty. Past experience , the detector had a steady red light if it needed attention. I’m not seeing that. Second, what is the procedure for removing smoke detector head without setting off system. Walk Test? I’m new to this school and not experienced with this system. Thanks

  1. The 4010 is an addressable system, details should be shown on the panel’s display. Press the acknowledge button to scroll through the details.
  2. Removing a smoke detector head results in a trouble condition - not an alarm. A trouble condition doesn’t activate alarm signals, nor does it summon the fire department. A trouble condition is self-restoring (so once the trouble is resolved the system will return to normal).

A few more things:

Cleaning instructions from Simplex’s documentation.

And last, but not least, an important note: since cleaning a smoke detector involves removing it, you must follow appropriate procedures before doing so - permits and/or fire watch personnel may be required.
If you’re not sure what these procedures are (they do vary among organizations and jurisdictions), ask your supervisor and/or the local authority having jurisdiction. In most cases the authority having jurisdiction will be the fire marshal/fire chief and/or a department of buildings. (It’s best to avoid doing this during operating hours.)

A trouble will show up, My elematry school has a 4010 and had a dirty dectoer and set the alarm off and the whole school evacuted.

I think if a dirty detector tripped the system the trouble was ignored until the detector was dirty enough to activate (for some reason).

It did at my elemtary school.

Is this setup in your house or a business? If it’s a business you best contact your alarm service company rather than do these things yourself. As others said, details of which is dirty should be on the panel. Pulling the head down shouldn’t cause an alarm, but will cause another trouble on the system.

Its in a school, I was able to clean detector and clear system. Thanks for all the help!
