Upgraded from my aging, slow iPhone 12 bought in June 2022, up to a brand new black iPhone 17 that’s hopefully a very noticeable improvement. Better camera, better battery, faster CPU, faster iGPU, much better screen, 4x the storage, twice the RAM, pretty much everything. Wishing a very fantastic Christmas to everyone!
You will definitely love it. I have an iPhone 16e that I bought last year, that is a step down from yours, that I have been very happy with. I think the biggest thing you will notice is the battery life. Apple engineered the batteries on the last couple iPhone generations to last 1000 cycles, rather than the previous 500 cycles. They are now rated to last around 6 years of normal use before there is noticeable deterioration, compared to the previous 3 years. I’ve had my phone for almost a full year, and the battery health is still at 100%. I definitely recommend setting the change limit to 80%, as you should still have plenty of battery, and it will greatly improve your battery’s longevity. Once your battery gets older and doesn’t last long enough, you can set it back to 100% to regain additional capacity for the battery’s final years.
You should probably add the tag not-a-fire-alarm.
Definitely noticed longer battery life. After literally an hour of YouTube it only dropped 3% which is insane.
It’s 2026 but I bought a 3 yr old phone NIB. It is the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra. Very powerful phone.
That was a pretty top-of-the-line phone when it came out, so I’d expect it to be good for at least a few more years. I don’t know how Samsung works with updates, but I know you can typically expect at least around 6 years of updates with Apple devices, and more years of usability after that. For example, Apple just released a new version of iOS 12 (12.5.8) as a security update to older iPhones such as the iPhone 5s and 6 (12+ year old devices) so that they continue working with iCloud services, such as iMessage and FaceTime after 2026. Also, my grandparents have a 2013 iMac. That has since been replaced by an M2 MacBook Air, but they still have it in their basement. It still works with all of the iCloud services. Unfortunately, many companies have just recently started to stop making versions of their apps that run on MacOS 10, so it was getting a little out of date. The outdated version of Safari was also causing some issues, so I downloaded a new version of Firefox, which does still support MacOS 10. Eventually, I decided to abandon MacOS entirely on that computer, as it was just becoming too incompatible, so it’s now running Linux Mint. It doesn’t have as many conveniences, but it seems to work okay, and it’s at least fully up to date.
I am trying to find a device to boot ubuntu onto, but the devices are bricked or going under repairs, and since windows will still be my primary use OS, I don’t want to run Linux files on the same hardrive with windows. Speaking of my phone, I brought the s23 ultra THIS YEAR. It is 3 yrs old but I still decided to get it. Guess what? I love it! I remember 2023 like it was a few months ago.
