New to Fire Alarms

Hello everyone,

My son has a strong interest in fire alarms.

He has several pull stations and horn/strobe alarms that we’ve wired up, and they work great.

Recently, he got two speaker/strobe alarms that seem to require a control panel or audio source to generate the alarm sound.

The models we have are System Sensor SpectrAlert Advance speaker/strobes.

Could anyone provide some guidance on what type of control panel, audio module, or other accessories would be needed to make these alarms work?

Much appreciated!

Well, you would need a voice panel, but those are very expensive: what should work however (for non-life safety purposes mind you) is an MP3 board that some members of the community actually use (mainly because they’re cheap & they work). Here’s a different version of the one that I use (its 20 inputs help ensure that you always have plenty of inputs for plenty of messages. You will however need a pretty beefy power supply to power it with as I’ve discovered (as well as a mini SD card & an adapter for said card):
FN-BC20 20-Channel Stereo MP3 Sound Board with 2x25W Amp & Enclosure

That’s awesome — I love that he’s into fire alarms! The SpectrAlert Advance speaker/strobes are a bit different from regular horn/strobes because they need a fire alarm control panel with a voice evacuation (EVAC) feature. They don’t generate sound on their own — they need an external audio source and amplifier. You’d typically need a compatible FACP with a voice module and 25V or 70V audio output. It’s a cool next step, just a bit more advanced setup!
