Welcome to the Fire Panel Forums! As a professional installer with three years experience, who recently got NICET 1 certified and is currently studying for the 2, I can tell you that the hardest part is really just having the right reference books and following NICET’s instructions. The good news is that the majority of those who take the level 1 exam pass on the first try. I’ll share a couple videos below, as they can demonstrate how to study better than writing can.

If you don’t already, buy a tabbed copy of 2014 NFPA 70, 2016 NFPA 72, and Ugly’s Electrical References. The Ugly’s book will save page flipping, thus time and is about $25. My co-workers, managers, and I were able to find 2017 NFPA 70 on Ebay for fairly cheap, like ~$32 when I purchased it. The copy of the 2016 NFPA 72 I purchased had half the index missing, so I just bought a brand new copy of that. I signed a DBA, so I can’t tell you what I saw on the test I took, but I can tell you that you’ll be asked questions regarding jobsite safety, electrical conduit, fire alarm concepts, inspections and testing, and how to install fire alarms.

I found success with things like online flashcards, and this study guide by Henry Nazar. Some people will take the practice tests and NICET 1 Fire Alarm courses, which is not a bad thing, but I personally didn’t feel the need to and I did pass without the help of the courses.

As for your question regarding the NEC, as you study the chapters you need most will naturally occur as you highlight your book, but it’s 110, 300, 358, 760, and Annex C that came up most when I studied for the Level 1. Hope this helps, and happy studying!
