PSA: A Startling Reminder to Check Your Fire Safety Equipment

If you don’t think this is the correct category, feel free to let me know or take care of it yourself.

Around 2:00AM this morning in my neighborhood, there was a house fire that unfortunately resulted in one fatality and a total loss of the structure. According to a survivor, the ionization smoke alarms that were less than 10 years old did not sound before the fire became inescapable. The only reason there was a survivor is that someone saw the house was on fire and started pounding on the door. The house was also only around 10 years old.

This is a good reminder to ensure that your smoke alarms are working properly, that you have more than just ionization smoke alarms, and that your other fire safety equipment is in order.

Stay safe!

Our next door neighbor’s house burned down as well. I thank God that everyone was at work when it happened. To describe how bad it was, we live a good ways away from the fire and the heat melted the siding off our house.

I’m glad we replaced our 22 year old hardwired smoke detectors! Prayers to the family!

Gosh yeah, those smoke detectors are a death trap literally.

oh god that’s terrible prayers to the family ionization should be reworked or better make photoelectric cheaper

Well it’s better now with the latest UL codes and smoke alarms. Unfortunately, most homes that weren’t built in the last few years still have cheap ionization smoke alarms that are not likely to save them in a fire.

Man, I remember this one time where my next door neighbor had a treehouse and they had kids playing with matches. I was outside when I saw the burst of flames and smoke. I climb up my tower to see that the treehouse was on fire. I called 911 and got AFD on scene, since required by law, Shelby County Sheriff Deputies arrive. Fire was put out after 5 minutes after being lit. I thought for a second that it might have been a controlled fire, but I still did the right thing. Kids were indeed confirmed in this situation. I go to the house 3 days after the fire to see their backyard. The grass had been burnt where the treehouse originally was. Safe to say that we now have 2 Fire Stations, One on the old side of Arlington, and one on the new side of Arlington. Safe to say that no one was injured or killed in this situation. Apparently, the kids jumped down to get away from the fire. I’m glad to see both of them alive and grown up. They are now driving and are a junior in high school. They lost their dad in a work accident, but they are still thriving today.
