I saw this on a Kidde smoke detector.
Pushing the test button tests the smoke detector weakly. It just tells you the horn and battery are functioning. It doesn’t test the smoke sensor.

From what I read, some companies claim to have the test button test the chamber in some way or fashion.
I’ve been looking into whether or not this is actually true.
Not sure about that myself, in any case though it’s still better to test the unit with actual smoke, such as smoke in a can for example, to make sure the sensor will pick up said actual smoke.
