Rare Smoke Detectors

Back to the topic…
Who wants to give a shot at identifying some of the old fire alarms in this video? There are some cool old smoke detectors in it.

I see a Honeywell pull station in the video.

As well as a BG-6, a BG-12, an ESL/ADT 4060-S, an FCI MS-2 with a SpectrAlert S1224 (Commonly known as Classic, proper name is “Legacy”) strobe, a Couch Chevron style pull, a would be Wheelock 34T, a 270-SPO with a key, an Integrity strobe plate, an Edwards 274-111 pullstation, a Kidde B-5 pullstation, an MT, a Pyrotronics smoke detector, LNG-1R (Not THAT rare…), a System Sensor 2400, and an SAE V-34 light plate.

Whew.

I almost forgot I had it, but recently found a smoke detector I have that was made in South Africa. It was sort of a promotional item for the company and it was made clear, showing the internal components and is mounted on a wooden plaque. I’ll get a pic of it soon.

When you get a pic of the smoke detector, can you PM it to me?

I suppose, but why do you need it PM’d to you? Can’t you save the pic by right clicking on it?

If you don’t want to PM it, you don’t have to. I could just save the pic directly to my iPad camera roll.

I don’t have a problem doing it, it just seemed like an odd request is all.

Here it is, in all its glory.

When was that smoke alarm manufactured?

I’m not entirely sure, but I think sometime between 1965 and 1980. The guy I bought it from had it for a long time and I bought it from him at least 5 years ago.

Wow! Call that one vintage.

That one is probably the first woodgrain smoke ive ever seen

What does a woodgrain smoke do?

It burns when a fire hits it.

I’m gonna guess it’s from the mid 80’s. It kind of looks like the Pyrotector Phoenix from the 80’s. Definitely not before ~1975 though, because that’s when LED’s first started appearing in fire alarm applications.

Here’s some rare goodness.

The box for the 1970’s Sears smoke alarm. I’m assuming this one is the one based on the First Alert SA76RS, with the squealer horn.

A very old metal? Gamewell ionization smoke detector. I’ve never seen one of these before. Looks really old.

An extremely rare Amway smoke detector that looks to be from the 70’s.

Check it out!!! Here is a Probe 101 for sale. Very rare alarm!!! Unfortunately I don’t have the budget for any more smoke alarms in the near future, but some lucky soul can buy this and keep a piece of smoke detection history.

I saw an feww old smoke detectors today, in an open house. I took videos:
First Alert SA76RS (finally I get to see one in real life!)

GE home sentry (newer 9-volt with black electro-mechanical horn)

Fyrnetics F900D (battery operated version of the 1200)

And I also saw a weird smoke detector a few weeks ago at a party at my aunt’s friend’s house. It had the same cover as a Sears brand, but it had what looked like a heat detector built in. I don’t’ know what type of horn it had, it was too high for me to reach. I don’t have any pics or videos of it. i’m guessing it was another Sears rebrand.

Hi all,

Happened upon this forum while going through my old collection in prep to sell parts of it. Thought you might be interested in a few tidbits of info about BRK/First Alert alarms.

BRK did produce AC/DC alarms before the 86RAC. I have one called the 77AC/DC. No date on the manual and it’s referred to as a “products of combustion” detector.

The smaller diameter SA67D cover seemed to first appear around 1987, around the same time the Light Test detectors were introduced. The original Light Test detectors had a yellow plastic test button rather than a black plastic button painted gold.

Not sure what the point of the SA80/81 was, they appear to simply be 79P/79Rs and 83P/83Rs with a new cover. Seems like they came in the original dome button and the cover mounted test button versions before being phased out in the 90s.

The original 1839 had a mechanical horn and off center test button, looking quite similar to the 86RAC. It survived until 1988, when it was replaced by the 1839 with center mounted test button.
