I recently purchased a new home a few months ago and in the process of replacing the smoke detectors came across one that seemed much older than the others. I was about to throw it away and decided to google the model number, which is how I came across this forum. Would anyone have any interest in it? It’s a Smoke Alert SA76RS, serial G415115 from looking at the back of the unit. It seems to be in decent shape and work but it was used in the house for a long time by looking at it (there’s paint around some of the edges). I don’t seem to be able to upload pictures here since I’m new but let me know. Thanks Guys.
Hi there welcome to the board. I have been with this board for about 2 years but within the last few months I have had issues where I was unable to post here. Hopefully this time around I will be able to. But I saw your post that you are looking to get rid of a First alert (smoke alert) SA76RS. I will gladly take it. It sounds like a battery operated model. My parents had the Sears version of this in their old house. I don’t however have an ebay account so if there is some way I can arrange to acquire the alarm I am very interested. I am in Canada as well. I am interested in 1970’s alarms which the SA76RS is. I only have 2 other alarms in my collection. A wind up fire bell from the 1960s and a Nortron AC smoke alarm from about 1977 to 1980 as it has a squealer horn.
If you still have the SA76RS I am still very interested. If you want to you can also PM me on here. Just wondering how old your other alarms are in your house that you are replacing. I take it they aren’t as old as this one which is about 40 years. But to have an RS in my small collection would be wonderful. Even though I used to be terrified as a child how they sounded.
When replacing your smokes it’s probably a good idea to go photoelectric at all costs. Most data nowadays is strongly pointing at the fact of these catching small incediary fires/light smoke quicker whereas the ion chambers have been known not to.
I hope this pic works. It has been a while since I posted pics here but I found this online. It is a picture from October 1979. Look at the smokes on that display. Those are neat and very popular ones from back in the day but I have never seen a plug in smoke like the one by the man’s left hand. It is a big square plug in detector. Looks extremely rare and there is also a rectangle detector that looks more like an alarm clock radio. (could be a combo of a radio and smoke detector). It is towards the very bottom of the display. Fire Alarm Fan you might know what they are. Pretty cool display if you ask me.
Looks like it worked. :). Thanks for the help on posting images here. That is a pretty neat display of smoke detectors from 1979. As you can see there are ones from that time period such as the Sears, Honeywell, Fyrnetics and there also appears to be an old First Alert with an escape light. Sorry I was unable to get a bigger picture of this but you can see the detectors but I would like to know what the big square plug in model is that is in between where the man and woman are standing and it is right by the man’s left arm. Also as I mentioned the one that is close to the bottom looks like it could be a combination of a radio and a smoke detector. Both look very rare.
That is a very cool picture. So many cool old alarms.
Even though I’ll probably get most of them wrong, I’ll have a try:
Top: JCPenney or Kwikset (?), First Alert SA120
2nd row: ADT/ESL, Honeywell TC89B/TC49A or Guardion FB-1 (?), SmokeGard 800A/809A, BRK 79R/SA769AC
3rd row: Norelco HB-0933/HB-0938, Fyrnetics/LifeSaver, Pyrotector (?), Man is in the way but looks like Vigilante, Earli-Gard (?)
4th row: Fyrnetics/LifeSaver, woman is in the way, Sears Early One 246.57045/439.57301, Fyrnetics/LifeSaver, man is in the way, Pyrotector/HeathKit 3077A/3077AF
5th row: Only alarm visible is SmokeGard 902 Line-cord model
6th row: VERY unusual alarm (Could it be Guardion? The front vents look similar), Honeywell CD100A line-cord model
7th row: Not sure, Pyrotector Smoke Sentinel
8th row: Unusual clock/smoke alarm combo possibly, Sears Early One 350.57045
9th row: Vulcan Autosonic Mark 60
Very cool indeed!
Hi FireAlarmFan, there are definitely some really neat old alarms in that pic. I didn’t know the First Alert SA120 was around in 1979. I thought it came out around 1980 or so as it has a piezo. Did the SA120 at one time have a squealer horn? Im guessing all these alarms had squealers as like I was saying it is from 1979 and I don’t recall smoke alarms have piezos that early on. I know any I heard back then were squealers. Sorry I couldn’t make the picture any bigger though. Im also still waiting to hear from a new member on here his/her name is bmccorkle. He/she recently purchased a house and there was a First Alert SA76RS in it. They were and hopefully still are trying to get rid of it and asked anyone here if they wanted it. I definitely jumped at the chance and replied. I hope hear from them again soon. I would do anything for that alarm. :).
I have an ESL #206 I removed from a 1977 Royal Lancer mobile I am remodeling. I think it works. I would be will to let it go to a good home for a small fee + S/H.
Is it battery powered or AC powered? Either way I am interested. I don’t have an ebay account though but Im sure I could work something out. I am interested in smoke detectors of that time period when they had squealers not piezos. Hope to hear from you soon. If you have pics of the detector I wouldn’t mind seeing it.
