Rare Smoke Detectors

Oh okay I didn’t know. I think I am going to need some help. I have the pics uploaded. There is no rush.

That’s normal, they all do that. Pressing the test button immediately after removing the battery discharges it. On both of mine, if I forget to push the test button, they’ll chirp about 3 mins later which is startling.

Oh okay good to know. I thought maybe it was possessed. Just kidding. I never noticed that years ago on these 1970’s units but again it is interesting and yes startling too when you aren’t expecting it to happen.

Howdy all… Created a quick account to post the following… Pulled some old smoke detectors from an older house and was going to trash them but figured I would do a quick google first and found that some poeple seem to collect older models.

Tried to find some info on the two I have but could only found a reference to the model number in this site so thought I would post here and see if anyone had any info on them… Does anyone know what year these might be? Are they considered rare/worth anything or should I just trash or donate?

They both seem in excellent condition and are both sears model 350.57045. I snapped a quick picture and posted it here - Hopefully this link will work… Imgur: The magic of the Internet - The image is about 2.4MB however the days of the 56k modem are long gone so that probably isn’t too large these days. The email account I used is just a throwaway one I will never check so please post replies here.

Thanks.

Hello, welcome to the forums
Those are some cool old Sears detectors from the 70’s, they appear to be the version based off of the Fyrnetics F-900D. Sears also made a version of the F-900D with a heat sensor. I saw one with a heat sensor a few years ago at my cousin’s husband’s mom’s house. They aren’t that rare (though I think they are rarer than their Fyrnetics “parents”) but still quite desirable for us collectors.

We’ve lived in our home for nearly 20 years (bought in '98, house was built in '76)…the whole time we’ve been here there’s been a little device in the hall to which we’ve paid very little mind (“Meh, it’s a hardwired detector…I guess.”). We are thinking of removing it and/or replacing it, but I can find NOTHING about it online (other than info on the manufacturer, Edwards, which is apparently a big name in commercial systems but not the home market). Could some of you experts have a look at the picture link and give us a guess as to what we have here? https://imgur.com/AA15Lr8

Wow that looks like a very rare smoke detector. Did you say it was hard wired? Almost somewhat resembles a door chime except for the red light. I just recently got an old First Alert SA76RS circa 1977 from a fellow poster on here who was getting rid of the unit but not a collector himself. I am more interested in battery powered units though but still this looks like a rare unit and again and interesting looking one. By the way how did you get your pic of the detector on here. I want to post some pics of my RS on here but I am not able to do so.

Definitely a rare one, I believe NLind/Fire Alarm Fan is currently searching for one. Also ironic that you mention it looks like a door chime, as Edwards also made those back in the day

Wow I never knew Edwards made door chimes but again we learn something new each day. Because this is a hard wired detector I won’t be upset if someone else gets it but can I ask a favour of you guys. If I sent one of you pics of my SA76RS could someone post it for me. I was given instructions on how to do it but I must be doing something wrong. Thanks. Videos of it hopefully will be coming soon.

Thanks for the feedback so far…hopefully some more folks will take a crack at the mystery before I go messing around with it. I agree it looks more like a door chime than anything else, but it doesn’t sound off with the upstairs unit and doorbells don’t (usually) have a “Reset/Test” switch, or a “Pull To Silence” tab on the bottom left that the picture doesn’t show. Speaking of pictures, missj, you’ll need an image host for posting photos (actually, links to photos)…Imgur.com is free and easy, and once you have an account you can upload pics and generate a link which you can then paste into a message as I did on my post.

Thanks I will try that and see if it works. I am also hoping to have testing videos of it this weekend, I am nervous when I talk so this is the reason for the delay. I promised bmmcorkle a video.

Hopefully I did this right but these are the pics of the unit I took including a pic of me holding the unit. If this doesn’t work would I be able to email you the pics so you could post them? Thanks.

It looks like the same images got posted so I am going to try these one at a time. There are about 5 of them so hopefully each one gets posted.

This was the same was as before. How do I get the other pics on here? If you are able to help me I would like that.

Thanks.

Hey guys I am going to try and copy the rest of the pics of my SA76RS using imgur. Hope it works this time.

Looks like it worked. Click on the links to see the pics of it.

Here is my small collection so far from left to right is the Gardsman wind up bell from the 1950’s/60’s. I got this a local second hand store a few years ago, the First Alert SA76RS smoke detector (circa 1977) that I just recently got from bmccorkle and last the Norton TR88 smoke detector 120 A.C. powered unit along with its original box and owners manual. This unit is circa 1977 to 1980 and also has a squealer horn and that small black rectangle is a side mounted test button. I also got that at the same second hand store. I am showing pics that show both the from and backs of the alarms. I am still on the lookout for the TR77 which is the battery powered unit.

Okay- I’m not a fire alarm enthusiast but I’m posting here out of desperation, so please pardon the intrusion.

My home has a nutone s180 installed.

It is chirping.

I opened it up and found -one- replacement bulb. I replaced it. It is not lighting up. It is still chirping.

It seems to be that when I placed the bulb back (it twisted in fine) the little pinchers didn’t seem to snap. I don’t if that’s the problem.

I’m also wondering if the replacement bulb was already used? I am a new owner to this house.

If anyone has any insight, I’d greatly appreciate it.
thanks

The pinchers could be the problem, or maybe the bulb was so old it already had failed. I’d suggest trying to reseat the bulb first.

I have a 1769 ACL. Just over 2 years after we bought our house the alarm suddenly went off. A few days later it went off again. None of my brand new smoke/carbon monoxide alarms went off. What gives?

Sounds like the sensor is dirty and causing a false alarm, using a vacuum brush around the outside of the unit may solve this problem. The 1769ACI is the offspring of the SA769AC and BRK’s series of system detectors. They aren’t meant to be opened.
