Rare Smoke Detectors

[quote=Helen75 post_id=86235 time=1582412202 user_id=5742]

I ended up with another detector today! I was at a friends house, and i mentioned hardwired smoke detectors to his dad. This lead to that, and suddenly, a BRK 1839acwi! I dont think it is any different than an 1839aci. It has the conical-shaped mechanical buzzer and the “false alarm” sensor. It makes sense, though, because the house was built in 1985. They powered it up and it worked! They also gave me the base. I would add pictures but dont know how. Also, good luck on the Honeywell alarm. Timmy73

He had a modern Kidde hardwired alarm that he used to replace one of the three alarms at his house. The one I got was mounted upstairs, and he disconnected it because the interconnect wasnt compatible. There was another one mounted downstairs. I told him that he should disconnect that one too if they were not compatible with the Kidde alarm. He also said he kept the one he replaced with the Kidde. So, I might end up with a couple more of those.

-Norelco Smokey units were made by Cerberus Pyrotronics, as were the original Sunbeam Centurions. Sears rebranded these at the same time they rebranded the BRK units.
-The Teledyne Water-Pik D-1 is a rebranded SmokeGard 800A believe it or not, so the Amway models could be considered rebrands of either.

I didnt realize that. Huh. Interesting!

-BRK also had the 1839N, 1839WN, 1839N12R, etc. The ones with the test button in the middle that had the continuous piezo.

What was the difference between all of these weird 1839 variants?

Well guys the update on my bid for the 1978 Honeywell CD200A is still active. Looks like i am the only one who has placed an offer. It ends at 4:20 pm EST which is my location (Im near Toronto, Canada). I have set up a paypal account and by the looks of it everything has been set up correctly. Again it is a first time so I won’t be upset if I don’t get the alarm (okay in a way I will. LOL) but at least I tried and there deifinitely will be a next try if this one doesn’t work out. Again fingers crossed!!!

I hope you are able to get the alarm then!

Thanks I should know in about 17 minutes. 8)

well guys I didn’t win the alarm this time around. Don’t know exactly what I was supposed to do but Ill get better! That is ok theres going to be plenty of other bids on here as I get better. Like I said Im new to ebay and I started later in life at it. Have a great day all!!!

Hey! This is still up if you want it! Its one of those metal Kidde alarms from the 70s for $20. I saw one at an open house; might have to ask them if I can have it

also if you get it, can you try to power it up? I want to know what it sounds like!

Hi Helen75 Im looking mostly for battery powered detectors but I might give this one a thought. I have a Nortron TR88 AC powered circa 1980-81 that I got brand new in box from a local second hand shop a few years ago. I took it to a workshop a year ago and they got it powered up. It sounds like the adaptahorns in my public school days way back in the late 1970s/early mid 1980s. Very powerful and might I add loud! Videos dont do those alarms justice until you have heard one in person. I actually put a bid on the Honeywell again only thing is the bid doesn’t expire until March 12th. One question sorry again Ebay newbie here and nearly 47 years old but when a bid is ending is it just supposed to expire without letting the buyer if know they won or not? Or is the buyer supposed to click on something. If you can help that would be wonderful I feel silly for asking but as the saying goes if you don’t ask you will never know. The Honeywell alarm also looks like it has the same horn as my First Alert SA76RS (1977).

Im hoping to buy this one by the end of this week. And the item is local so it won’t cost as much. Only one left and a plug in model but still something I can power up once it is out of the box. I don’t think my second bit for the Honeywell was even added but Im keeping my eye on this. I will keep you all posted on what I decide to do! This from the 1970’s.

eh, im not sure thats a good buy. Its newer, and Earli-gard rebranded a lot of these-they can be found cheaper.
Hope you get it, though

Also, Ebay tip. If you have the max bid, you can automatically increase it, and from what I know, it will automatically outbid other people up to a certain level. See if that works!

Also sears early one. (fyrnetics rebrand)

I just sent the offer on the Sears. Hope it works! My parents had this detector in both the houses I grew up in. I have the SA76RS. So basically a First Alert with a Sears cover, NOTE: The First Alert cover is much smaller than the Sears. again as I found with ebay it can be a hit and miss with bids but I like it…will keep you all posted!!!

Looks like this could be a winner!! Thanks Helen75. I will keep you all posted!!!

I know the 1839N12R had a built-in relay, I honestly don’t know about the N and the WN. Could be the number of units you could interconnect together.

Those are neat, they have a transformer and a squealer horn. One of my friends (a user on here) found an Earli-Gard rebranded one new in box. Another one of my friends has one in their upstairs hallway, been trying to get it for years.

okay I think the W means wiring harness because those use a connector to attach wires. I dont think regular ones use a connector

Jameson React 9v alarm from 1982. Basically a rebrand of the Firex fxb1. Nlind/fire alarm fan has one of these.

Original Smokey Stovers from 1983. These were made by Gateway. These are pretty rare so I would get one of this while you can. Also, it was made on my friend’s birthday!

Here’s an oddball I recovered from my aunt’s former rental home, while she was moving out. For the 10+ years she lived there, I was suspicious as to what it initially was. Only until she moved out, I realized it was indeed a vintage smoke detector. At first, I thought it would have been a hardwired detector, but after removing it from where it was previously mounted, I was surprised that it was a battery operated model.

What’s really odd is the Sears sticker complete with a model, but one guy on Instagram pointed out it’s an ESL, possibly missing its front cover too.

That looks awfully similar to the 1970s NuTone/Scovill alarms with the covers twisted off. Also, I subbed to your channel a while ago. You have some cool things on there!
