I’ve been curious if the Simplex 4005/4006/4008/4010 series annunciators (4606-9101) and 4020/4100 series annunciators (4603-9101) are interchangeable. I didn’t think so, but I’m trying to figure out if I can determine at least the panel series a building has by annunciator alone.
I believe (but am not certain) that the 4606- can only be used with the 4000 series panels, and the 4603- can only be used with 4100 series panels and the 4020. Is this correct?

Correct, they’re not interchangeable.
The 4606-9101 uses an N2-based protocol, while the 4603-9101 uses the RUI protocol.
N2 was developed by Johnson Controls. I wonder if this licensing agreement evolved into JCI buying Tyco…
RUI was developed in-house by Simplex.
There’s also a 4606-9102 which is used with the 4010ES.
Despite its model starting with 4606, it’s a 4603 that omits the top programmable function button, as the 4010ES only has 3 programmable function buttons.
