These terms are often used interchangeably. However they’re not quite the same. All smoke alarms are smoke detectors, however not all smoke detectors are smoke alarms. A smoke detector with no built-in alarm is not a smoke alarm.

I’ve never heard a smoke detector that was not a smoke alarm being called as such, and either name could be used for a smoke alarm.
I personally just like calling smoke alarms “smoke alarms”, and not “smoke detectors”. Whenever communicating, if someone calls a smoke alarm a “smoke detector”, this can lead to confusion or future miscommunication. Context clues don’t always help. I’ve also heard smoke alarms being called fire alarms.
If someone speaks about their house, and talks about the smoke detector, it’s not confusing. Not very many houses have smoke detectors without built-in alarms.
Well, we could just be chatting about alarms. Anyway, there are condos and apartments, which could either have a commercial fire alarm system, a smoke alarm, or both.
