Hi everyone,
I have owned a System Sensor MDL sync module for a while now, and got it NIB. The first thing I noticed when I got it is that the placement of the mounting holes don’t allow me to mount it to either a standard 4-inch back box. So, ever since I got it I have never mounted it and the 4 mounting screws are still unused. The manual calls for some sort of specific backbox for it that is needed for mounting, but it never references any model numbers. What’s more confusing is that on System Sensor’s website, it doesn’t even list the back boxes as even existing. I would like to mount it on my fire alarm board so I don’t have to keep it on the floor where it could easily be stepped on and damaged.
If they are referencing a general backbox that this could be mounted to with the correct screw arrangement, does this mean this type of backbox is sold at a home improvement/hardware store? I’d like to avoid buying one on eBay as I would like to get this done as quickly as possible, but if it’s the only option, I’ll take it.
It mounts to a “double gang” box. These are commonly available, so you wouldn’t have to special order it from an alarm company or anything. You could also purchase an adapter plate if you wish to use a standard 4" box.
The INSTALLATION AND MAINTENANCE INSTRUCTIONS (I56-0983-015R) for MDL page 4, shows it mounting to a 4 11/16 electrical box which is a standard item. They can be found at home centers or electrical supply houses.
I’m not sure what part of the country you live in, but if you have Menard’s stores in your area here’s the products I mentioned as found in their online catalog.
I prefer the welded boxes for their lower cost and increased interior volume when compared to extruded boxes, but those would work too and are of slightly higher quality. They’ll run you a few bucks more.
These aren’t 100% intended for this purpose, but they do their job and I use them frequently. Make sure you use flathead screws with these to ensure the device can sit flush on the plate, or upgrade to a raised ring such as this: Pardon Our Interruption
I live in Ohio (northeastern) so no Menard’s around here. There are Lowe’s and The Home Depot, so I’ll make sure to make a note of it before I swing by there to pick one up.
