Things considered rare in the UK

I start off this chat with a very rare UK find. It’s not a British brand but an AMERICAN brand. I found a Gentex Commander in an ASDA. It’s located in between the 2 shutters at the ASDA in Glasshoughton in West Yorkshire. Another bonus was: It was doing code 3 chime!

The alarm model was white with a green strobe.

Hello, I am from the UK, and yes I have seen that particular Gentex Commander in my local Asda.

Are they considered particularly rare then, or are they common in pretty much every ASDA. The thing is, there’s another ASDA near me that doesn’t have one.

Another question for ya aswell (if u dont mind answering).

Have you heard them sound off?

Yes. American alarms are pretty rare in other countries

Walmart used to own Asda until recently, so maybe that’s how this setup originated.

In this case the Commander may be a refrigeration alarm.

They’re out there, not just the UK but in my country I’ve seen two instances of that, first a trio of Simplex 4040s or 4050s on a building in my town, and the second occurrence was a SpectrAlert Classic at a McDonald’s, installed just above the drink fountain Co2 tank room.

Update: It can’t be because ASDA was owned by Walmart originally, as I found another Gentex Commander in my local Sainsbury’s.

Another update: I found the Gentex Commander at that ASDA. It’s just tucked away in a corner

Nice, my local ASDA also has a Gentex Commander 3 in the top right above one of the Galaxy alarm keypads (ADT Galaxy system)

Interesting. The Gentex Commanders I have seen are all located near Security Desks, but often sound off for no apparent reason.

Noice, my ASDA has a Galaxy keypad via the main public stairs (the main store is on the first floor) and another Galaxy keypad in the pharmacy near the pharmacy’s pneumatic tube and some type of Elmdene 7422 bell box

The commander in the US is so common
I have one as a matter of fact

Thats probably to warn of co2 leaks
My city market has edwards integrity refriderant leak alarms
And a white and green strobed gentex commander which is probably a anti theft alarm
I do live in the US btw so i see commanders everywhere

Yeah it was exactly that, matter of fact underneath there was a sign that read something among the lines of “Carbon Dioxide leakage alarm - Do not enter if alarm sounds”.

I was just coming out of my local ASDA and the Gentex Commander 3 went off briefly in code 3

I see a lot of those as general notification appliance chime strobes. Usually I hear them chime and its always code 3.

I know I’m late to the discussion, but I believe they’re mostly used for security purposes. I have one at my local Tesco (white with green strobe) and it normally sounds off whenever there is nobody at the security desk.

Shopping trolleys set them off, it’s a system that does it

in my experience it isn’t linked to the alarms on the barrier thingies at the doors, it’s just for security staff that aren’t at the desk.
