I don’t think they’re coded; I know East Junior High’s alarm system was in Continuous. But I do think Gamewell made a coded version, and these were their main manual pull stations until they came out with the Centuries in the early 1960s.
As big as a Stopper II, I believe. Which IS rather big for a pull station these days!
As I said, East Junior High had these too, but they also said something like “PATENT 1925” or something like that on it, so I think Gamewell made these from the 1920s up until the early 1960s. (As I said, the earliest I know they were around was 1954, when West Junior High School was built; North and East were built in 1957-1958.)
They are a little bit bigger than a stopper II, not far off from the size of a street box you would see outside. I have one sitting around somewhere and I can’t tell if its coded or not because it’s locked and I don’t have the key.
The fire alarm system at My high school is interesting. In the older wings, We have Edwards 270-SPOs and Old 10" single stroke Adaptabels. They still have the old bell system (they use the PA system for the bells). They mostly have IBM 4" bells, 6" Adaptabels,
And one 4" Simplex bell in the basement. The newer wings (Double gym, Tech wing) have 10" vibrating Adaptabels. The tech wing has an Adaptabel in each classroom. It sound wierd. You hear, “Ding, Ding, Ding,” and then you walk in the tech wing and then you hear, “BBBRINGGG, BBRINGGG, BBRINGGG.”
The A.J. Wright store I’m going to be working at has an FCI-72 panel, Gentex GOS horn/strobes, and an RSG T-bar with a Stopper II (located in the main entrance.)
The alarms at my school are 10" Edwards Adaptabels. The Ones in the older wings either look like:
While the ones in the newer wing look like:
The newer ones are vibrating. The Pulls are 270-SPOs. I was checking the floor plans and it shows that the panel is in the boiler room in the basement, Which is in the tech wing, so The panel could be a Edwards 65OO or newer. We still have the old bells around that have been disconnected for awhile now. Theres about 5 4" IBM Bells, 2 4" Simplex bells, and 4 6" Adaptabels. We now use the P.A. system.
On January 27, 2010, I went to an after-school club which I usually go to once a month. We went to the preschool, which was right next to my high school, which was built in 2003.
The alarms there were EST Genesis horn/strobes along with SIGA-278 pulls. The annunciator looked something like http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqR58cKR7wo this (seen here) but I don’t know if the system is an EST QuickStart because the building is small, hence it was preschool.
I’m doing an internship at a local TV station. We have Fire-Lite MiniScan (unsure of the exact model, as there’s no label on the front, but it looks exactly lke Schumin’s ES panel, possibly an MS-124) with BG-10 pulls at the exits and no smokes. As for the signals, I’ve seen only three on the first floor: two 1st generation Integreties and a Federal Signal Vibratone h/s. One Integrety and the Vibratone are in the hallways (spaced pretty far apart) and the second Integrety is in the newsroom. There are no alarms in the studio. There is a second floor and parts of the first floor I haven’t been to, but I assume there’s either more Vibratones or Integreties (given the panel, I assume the Integreties replaced the Vibratones). The panel has ADT and Tyco stickers on it, so apparently ADT services the system. Fun stuff…
In the french wing (which is probably the oldest wing) In my french class, It has 3 heats that look like this:
PICTURE IS NOT MINE, BUT WILEY209’s
But I think they are manufactured by edwards, not simplex. After finding that out, I wonder why they need 3 heats in one room (around 6.5m by 3.5m), and if they are even connected to the FA system.
The next one is in my music room, there is a newer Edwards 10" bell, which I believe is the vibrating type. I really hope i’m not in there when we have a fire drill.
the last one is in the religion portable, where i found out that the religion portables don’t have 270-SPOs in them but these:
Actually, they are made by Chemtronics. They were rebranded by Edwards, Simplex and other companies. For a while Simplex DID rebrand Edwards’s own heat detectors in the late 1970s and 1980s.
The Lowe’s store I am going to be working at has a Silent Knight fire alarm system. The panel is an Intelliknight 5820XL, the smoke detectors are these Silent Knight models that look kinda like the Simplex 2098 smokes, and the pulls are SD-500PSs (I’m pretty sure they are addressable.) The signals are Wheelock AS horn/strobes, all of them the red version, and a mix of wall and ceiling-mount versions, and a few ceiling-mount RSS strobes. Unusually, a few of the wall-mount signals are actually ceiling-mount versions, and have the sideways “FIRE” lettering!
I’m surprised the store even has smoke detectors! I’ve never seen a home improvement store with smokes installed - usually it’s just pulls and sprinklers. At the Lowe’s near me, I forget the panel brand, as at the entrance there’s just an LED keypad (like at Walmart and Target), but the pulls are BG-12s and signals are for the most part ceiling-mount ASs, with 3 wall-mount signals in the front, one of which is a ceiling-mount model. There’s no RSSs installed. And strangely, the bathrooms have wall-mount SPECTRALERTS (horn/strobes) on the ceiling. And just as a bonus, the emergency exits have white, unlabeled Commander3s.
To be fair, they do have sprinklers, except the smoke detectors are only in the back area where the offices and the break room are, as well as the electrical room the panel is located. They also have white unbranded Gentex SHGs for the fire exits.
My town has two TrueValues. One of them has Fire-Lite BG-6s and Wheelock 7002ts. I don’t know if there are any smokes. The other TrueValue has no alarms.
