So, we had our usual once-a-semester fire drill for the music building on Friday, September 20 at 11:15 AM. Campus Security conducts all fire drills for the college. The system is a late 1990s-early 2000s Simplex 4005 (replacing a 4207–cabinet is still intact for use as a wiring box) system running Simplex 4051s, System Sensor MASS-ADAs (800 Hz), a Wheelock AS-24MCW-FR (high volume), and a Wheelock MT-1224R (high volume horn), all in Temporal 3. I was in the choir rehearsal room on the ground floor. The 4051 down the hall from the choir room, which already sounded rough, started growling after three rounds of Temporal and ultimately completely sputtered out.
The following Monday, I noticed the 4051 was marked with a piece of blue masking tape while on my way to String Instrument Methods (currently learning cello and will switch to violin next week). SimplexGrinnell//JC came in on Wednesday and replaced the dead 4051 with a Wheelock MT-1224R horn. However, the biggest surprise was the appearance of a new Wheelock MT-24MCW-FR horn/strobe in the choir room! Both horns are probably set to High Volume Horn (I haven’t heard them yet, but that’s what the other Wheelock signals are set to) and the strobe on the MT-24MCW-FR is toggled to 75 Candela. This room didn’t have an alarm previously, and the old 4051 was loud enough that we could usually hear it.
I’m excited to see what the next fire drill has in store for us! I did hate to see the old 4051 go, but it did finally wear out, after all.
Did you ever post this system out in the “What alarm do you have at work/school” for this building and the other buildings on the campus because it does seem very interesting.

I posted a preliminary version in “Fire Alarms in Buildings 2.0” eons ago, but I’ll go ahead and restate it here in its complete form. My first aforementioned post was not complete, as I had not been through the entire building then.
The main panel is a Simplex 4005 installed in 2002-2003 during a major auditorium renovation, which is replacing a 4207 installed during a 1976 renovation//upgrade and a Fire-Lite MS-5210UD (cabinets for both still intact but gutted; forgot to mention this in the previous post) installed during a 1997-1998 expansion (building was built in 1922). 8 zones are in use and the 4005 is installed in the main boiler/electrical room on the ground floor. There is a Simplex 4602-9102 RCU LED annunciator in the main vestibule. Signal coding is Temporal 3 across the board, generated by the 4005.
Initiating devices from the 1976 portion of the system are Simplex 4251-20 pull stations. The practice rooms and storage spaces were fitted with System Sensor 2100 smoke sensors in the 1990s when the Fire-Lite panel went in. The 1997-98 expansion has Simplex 2099-9754 pulls (replacing the original Fire-Lite BG-10s) and System Sensor 2100 smoke sensors. At least 5 smokes (that I know of) have been replaced with Simplex 4098-9601 conventional TrueAlarm sensors.
Notification appliances from the 1976 portion are Simplex 4051 horns on trim plates. A couple of them are surface mounted on red backboxes, and there are no visual signals in this portion. The 1997 expansion and 2003-renovated section have System Sensor MASS-ADA horn/strobes (800 Hz). The restrooms in the 1997 portion have System Sensor SS-241575-ADA strobes. The 2003 restrooms have SpectrAlert Classic SC241575 remote ceiling strobes. Two 4051 horns have now been replaced with Wheelock MT-1224R horns (high volume horn). The large rehearsal room on the ground floor has a Wheelock AS-241575-FR horn/strobe (high volume) and the choir room, also on the ground floor, now has a Wheelock MT-24MCW-FR horn/strobe.
Nice to know that your college still has 4051s because mine did before they got replaced. 
I’ve been meaning to post this for a while now, but my old elementary school had an interesting system before it was replaced in 2010 with a Simplex 4010/ Truealerts. The school was built in 1968 with what I’m assuming was an Autocall/ Federal Signal system. There were several 450D’s scattered around along with 4050 pull stations. At some point, I think the panel was replaced with a Firelite panel, as there were also many Wheelock 7002t’s and Firelite BG-10’s. A classroom addition was put in in the the late 80’s or early 90’s, and it had clear Space Age Electronics strobes. The music classroom also had a Spectralert Classic horn, which probably replaced one of the SAE strobes. The system was set on code 3, which made the 7002t’s sound funny when they’d skip, but that system is what got me interested in fire alarms.
Question: Was the Space Age Electronics strobes you are talking about in the school these strobes right here?

Yes, but they were just strobes, not strobe plates.
What did the wing that have these strobes have for horns then?
Another thing:
The kitchen dishwashing area has a high-temperature Chemetronics heat detector.
If I remember correctly, there was one 7002T in the hallway. The addition was only three classrooms, so it wasn’t a big area.
Also, sorry for doubleposting here, but like I said a while back, the Siemens MXL-IQ system at my High School was replaced with a 4100ES. I noticed that in the auditorium though that there are still Siemens pull stations next to the entrances, even though there are T-bars right next to them! There are also two UMMT’s that are still in there, I’m assuming because they’re quite high up on the wall. I’d be really suprised if the Siemens pull’s were tied into the 4100ES. Isn’t it a code violation to have disconnected pull stations still up on the wall? I’ll try to get pictures sometime soon.
2 more things:
The restroom off the main entrance has a vertical AS.
A speaker/strobe in the gym has a broken protective cage. I reported it and it will hopefully be fixed soon!
I can’t imagine it being pleasant if you are in that bathroom when there is a fire alarm.

All the restrooms have horn/strobes except:
The single-stall restrooms which have RSS strobes.
The restroom near the science classrooms which has E70 speaker/strobes.
Then I am so glad I am no where near that school when I was still a student. 
I don’t know what the old system was but I think it might have been 4040s judging by a few cover plates in the hallways. (the school was built in 1962 and the library area was added in 1968. Everything was renovated in 1998 and the science rooms were added in 2012.)
Then I’m sure that you are definitely 100% glad that you weren’t there when they had those horns because they would have been enough to loosen the earwax in your canals. :lol:
I have a little update from my former workplace, which I recently resigned from after accepting a new job in another community.
Our building has been under remodeling on the ground floor, and during construction, I noticed one of the electrical rooms had a Firecom CAB-50 unit (part of the Firecom Life Safety Net 2000 series, according to an electronic brochure on the Firecom webpage), which leads me to guess the panel in the lobby is a Firecom LSN-2000 voice-evacuation unit. The cabinet was closed when I passed it (I obviously didn’t go into the room itself), but I would guess electronic extender components are inside.
Lastly, an old storage room that was gutted as part of the remodeling had a rebranded Wheelock E90-W-series speaker/strobe on the ceiling. New drywall has been installed, and some wall boxes that look like they will house new alarm devices are in place, which, if I had to guess, would likely include rebranded Sigcom t-bars and rebranded Wheelock E70 and/or E90 speaker/strobes.
